Donna Dorn documents Japan's Edo period, proclaiming White Beard had turned it from its most prosperous time to its bloodiest. Expecting an easy victory, she says, he marched to Otsu with only a small company of men. She also documents the Trials of the Fire Scroll, the Ninety Ronin, and the Snake Women. She also gives historical perspective to Yaeko and the Kensei sword.
