|It takes a certain kind of person to look up.|
As West flies above Costa Verde one afternoon, he revels in his ability and his uniqueness. He breaks down the differences of each level of the atmosphere--including temperature, feel, and smell--and explains how to coexist with airplane traffic. He philosophizes on his breakdown of people into two categories: robots and aliens, the former operating on conventional logic (to the point that he can float only a few feet above their heads without their knowledge, as "they never look up") and the latter being abstract thinkers. Back at his school the next morning, after a night of flying, he sees Claire, and feels compelled to get to know her.
