James Kyson Lee interview

This is really short notice. I'm calling James Kyson Lee on Friday 8/24 at 4 pm, EST. Any questions go below--you know the drill. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:51, 22 August 2007 (EDT)

  • Wow, nice interview you snagged! Hope my questions help.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:21, 22 August 2007 (EDT)
    • Thanks, and yes, good questions. This is a bit of different interview because I've had to go through James's publicist and manager (though he sent me an email, too). It's been a bit more back-bending than I'm used to, but I suppose that's natural, eh? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:23, 22 August 2007 (EDT)
      • Yeah, that's hollywood. ;)--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:25, 22 August 2007 (EDT)
      • Ryan, when are you going to add the new power? Ryan: Power to get Awesome interviews. haha. Great job getting James Kyson Lee! So cool! I'm still working on a Hayden meeting. :l My dad hasn't talked to her agent, Valerie lately... But who knows. Maybe soon I'll ask again. (Not that I'd want to bug them and seem like an overly addicted freak.) Even though I am. haha. Anyway, awesome. I can't wait to see his responses. Jason Garrick 23:48, 22 August 2007 (EDT)
        • Hehe, that's great Jason. :) It'd be great if you got to meet Hayden. She seems really down-to-earth. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:14, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
        • Well moreover I'd maybe just ask for an interview for here. I'll see what I can do. Jason Garrick 00:38, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • Excellent job, Ryan! I'm pleased we're able to interview the people we have in the past. They're people with great information and stories to tell, but since they're not quite in the limelight they frequently get missed. The interview with James will be a great addition to the collection. (Admin 00:45, 23 August 2007 (EDT))
    • Thanks. This was a bit of a coup and required a bit of work. I hope it'll be worth it. Your questions are particularly insightful and thoughtful. Thanks for helping me feel more prepared for Friday. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:02, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
      • Nice job Ryan. Any chance the fact you got this ITW is linked with the fact J.K.L. just registred on our wiki ? :) -- Frenchflo.gif (talk) 08:42, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
        • Thanks. Actually, barely any connection at all with him (or his publicist) registering at Heroes Wiki. I've been contacting some of the cast members lately, trying to set up interviews. I know that somebody who works for James often updates sites like Wikipedia, IMDb, and even this one. So I figured James would be a good target, just because he obviously has a gung ho publicist. So I contacted his publicist, and a million years later, we have our interview set. It's a good thing, too--he's heading to NYC on Monday for the Heroes World Tour (and I start work again that same day). The timing just worked out very nicely. Very short notice, but nicely nonetheless. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:43, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

Interview Questions

  • First off James, thank you for talking to HeroesWiki. Will Ando meet any of the new cast, and if so how we he react to them?
  • Can you give us anything about Ando's part in Season 2? :) --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 23:04, 22 August 2007 (EDT)
  • Have you seen yourself in the latest comic series? What do you think of your likeness? According to imdb, you're filming two movies in addition to shooting 'Heroes' episodes. How busy do you feel and do you have any preference for film over television, or vice versa? --MiamiVolts (talk) 23:18, 22 August 2007 (EDT)
    • How long (on average) do you get to prepare/memorize your script for a particular scene? Do you and Masi get extra time to confirm your lines with the Japanese translator(s)?--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:36, 22 August 2007 (EDT)
    • Will Ando be meeting the other heroes besides Hiro more often in season 2? What was it like welcoming an all new cast? What is it like behind the scenes of Heroes right after shots? Jason Garrick 23:45, 22 August 2007 (EDT)
    • Any chance of seeing Ando's family? --DocM 14:14, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • On Heroes Wiki, do you personally make the edits by user "Jameskysonlee" or is that done by the people who handle your publicity?
    • Follow-up if it is him:
      • How did you find Heroes Wiki?
      • Have you ever heard anyone else from the cast mention the site?
      • And finally you can ask if he'd like a free Heroes Wiki t-shirt if he gives you his t-shirt size and an address to mail it to. This part can be omitted from the interview text, but while you have him in the phone you might as well ask. :) (Admin 00:40, 23 August 2007 (EDT))
  • Tim Kring mentioned during Comic-Con that he wanted to encourage the Heroes fan base to be heroes themselves and to give something back. Are there any charities in particular that you're promoting? (Admin 00:40, 23 August 2007 (EDT))
  • James, you're one of the few members of the cast that I see performing interviews time after time for different smaller Heroes fan sites and podcasts rather than only interviewing with the larger news sites. I just wanted to express my thanks for devoting so much of your time and attention to interacting with your fans as directly as possible. (Admin 00:40, 23 August 2007 (EDT))
  • While you clearly enjoy your role as Ando, do you feel any dis-satisfaction at the Hollywood notion that all Asians seems to be interchangeable, that any Asian race can play any other Asian race? For example, you are a Korean-American playing a Japanese. Garrett Wang, who was Ensign Kim on ST:Voyager was a Chinese-American playing a Korean, and in Memoirs of a Geisha, an international cast from all over Asia, including Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, and more were all playing geishas, which is of course, Japanese. Masi, and Takei are the only exceptions in recent memory (they both get to play Japanese characters). What is your opinion on that?
  • How much of an input do you have toward your character, Ando? Or is it all up to the writers?
  • Are you happy that they finally decided to feature you in the Graphics Novels? Kschang 03:13, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • Are you excited about the upcoming Heroes World Tour? Did you have any say in where you were told to go, or was it decided by the production staff? And, finally, have you got any messages to all of your fans out there who follow the show so religiously? --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  08:39, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • What is the best thing about being in Heroes? Which castmember would you say you got on with the most? --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  08:39, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • What was your favourite thing about Season One, from both your experience as an actor, and of the season as a whole? --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  08:39, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • Have you seen the DVD special features? If so, what is your favourite, and why? --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  08:39, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • (not really a great question but...) What were your thoughts when you read that Ando was going to fight Sylar by himself? --DocM 08:53, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • (Let's ask him the same question he asked during Miss Universe 2007 as a member of the Jury ) If you could have one of the character's power; which one would it be and what would you do with it? -- Frenchflo.gif (talk) 10:45, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • Ando is playing a big supporting role for Hiro but he doesn't have any powers, how do you feel to play a powerless character in the middle of a super-powered team ? -- Frenchflo.gif (talk) 10:45, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • You aren't actually a Japanese speaker yet your character has to speak a lot Japanese, how easy was it for you to learn your lines whilst you are still learning this new language, and did it have any affect on your portrayal of Ando?-- Hiro  talk  contribs  14:06, 23 August 2007 (EDT)
  • How would you describe your character?
  • If Ando would have a power, what power would you think fits with his character?
  • Will Ando be doing anything like stunts in the next season?
  • Will you still be Hiro's sidekick throughout his NEW journey?
  • Hi there James! First, thanks for taking time to talk with the HEROES fans! I just had a few questions. How would you like your character to develop in HEROES? What do you think Ando will do as an average Joe to make a difference/be a hero? And one request: Will you have time to stop by 9thWonders and say hey to the fans there? If so, I'm sure that they would appreciate it (& other HEROES fansites whose fans wouldn't mind a visit include HEROES-TV.com and HEROESTheSeries.com)! Thank you again for your time! Re: Interview

  • Nicely done for your first cast interview, Ryan! For the next time, I'd suggest trying to avoid questions that's been asked over and over. I'm mainly refering to that he already confirmed that he new some Japanese and from where in previous interviews, so that's why I suggested to ask how long on average he gets with the translators per script. Maybe you missed my question? Anyways, it's great that you're doing all these interviews. Please don't get be offended by my criticism. :)--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:38, 25 August 2007 (EDT)
    • No, no offense taken, of course. I had about a million questions to ask a man who was very pressed for time, and who is, let's just say, very talkative. :) It's impossible to get all the questions in there, even the very good ones. And I'm still learning how to steer a conversation without interrupting, which may be nearly impossible in the case of somebody who talks a mile a minute. But it was fun talking to him, we had a great time, and laughed a lot....I'm glad you enjoyed the interview too. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 02:08, 25 August 2007 (EDT)
      • Yeah. Nice job once again ! Cool to have cast itw ! :) It's more intersting in my opinion than GN writers but much harder to get I suppose ;) -- Frenchflo.gif (talk) 12:00, 25 August 2007 (EDT)
        • I find them both to be very interesting. There's a certain "cool" factor to interviewing a member of the immediate cast, but at the same time since they're higher profile people they get interviewed more so often a lot of what they say has already been said in other interviews. The graphic novel artists, graphic novel writers, casting directors, etc. get interviewed less since they're in the background helping to make the show run smoothly. As a result what they say is often the first glimpse at what's going on behind the scenes so the interview can be very interesting and informative. My original thought was that we'd mostly be interviewing people behind the scenes in order to find out their stories, but since Ryan's been so good at it and motivated it's gotten to the point where we may be seeing interviews with some people in the limelight so to speak. In time, perhaps even interviews with people like Tim Kring, Zachary Quinto, and other very popular actors and actresses. Though as Ryan found out with James Kyson Lee it's a little more complicated than just emailing them and arranging a time. :) (Admin 12:07, 25 August 2007 (EDT))
          • Thanks for your kind words, guys. I very much enjoyed talking with James, and I'm sure this interview will get a lot more publicity, be good for the site, and, as Admin said, is just pretty cool. But from an interviewing standpoint, I think my best interview, oddly enough, is my first one. I find that more "inside" information about the show is to be had in interviewing the people who are actually creating it (which, in the case of the GNs, would be the writers before the artists, even) rather than those who use their talents to perform it. I had great fun talking with James, but I would personally rather read interviews with behind-the-scenes guys. That's just me, personally, and where my interests lie. But I've always been the kind of guy to listen to a director/writer DVD commentary track than to watch a featurette focusing on the actors. I'd rather read Greg Beeman's blog, poring over all the nerdy details of how he focused the camera or why he decided to cut a scene, than to read a TV Guide article with an actor interview (unless it's Masi, then I'm in heaven). Both have their place, I'm just partial to the geeky stuff. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:45, 25 August 2007 (EDT)
