Character History

Graphic Novel:The Crane

Hiro recalls that his mother named him after Hiroshima "so that we would never forget".

Five Years Gone

While interrogating "past" Hiro, Matt Parkman reads out his profile "Name: Hiro Nakamura. Born: Osaka, Japan to Kaito and Ishi."

Cautionary Tales

In an effort to convince his father to not accept his upcoming death, Hiro teleports Kaito to Aoyama Cemetery in 1990 to re-witness Ishi's funeral. Kaito, however, remains convicted that his death must play out as it originally happened. Nevertheless, Kaito is both distressed and saddened by having to watch his wife's funeral again; admitting it was the worst day of his life. Both father and son pay their respects.

Kaito was buried beside Ishi at Aoyama Cemetery.

Graphic Novel:Past Experience

Ishi Nakamura's daughter, Kimiko, recalls that as a child, she enjoyed the act of "ikebana", or arranging flowers, with her mother.

Our Father

Hiro and Claire teleport back in time and Hiro witnesses a scene between his younger self and Ishi. It is here she is revealed to be an evolved human; by using her power to heal an ailing dove, as well as others. Later, Hiro and Claire witness a conversation, in English, between her and Kaito. It is revealed Ishi was expecting death; and she knows it will happen that night, and she also held The Catalyst (or as she calls it "The Light") before Claire and that she wanted to transfer it to Hiro. Kaito refused and wanted it transferred to Claire. Later, Hiro, mistaken for a new chef, brings her waffles as he doesn't know how to make what she wanted, and convinces her of who he is after she says he looks familiar. After hearing that he has lost most of his memories she agrees to try and use her power to restore them although she's not sure if it will work. It does and Hiro gets back his memories. Hiro convinces her to transfer the catalyst into him instead of baby Claire. Ishi does so, but the process kills her and she dies in her son's arms.

Evolved Human Abilities

Ishi has the ability to heal living things. Like Daniel Linderman, she seems to require physical contact with whom she is healing. She also kisses who is being healed, but it is unknown it is actually required for her to do so. She also transferred the catalyst to Hiro, but whether this was by using her powers is unknown.

Notes

  • Ishi Nakamura named her son Hiro to commemorate his grandfather's experience in Hiroshima (The Crane). It is unknown whether this grandparent is the father of Ishi or of Kaito.
  • There are inconsistencies as to the date of Ishi's death. In Cautionary Tales, she is shown to have died in 1990, with her funeral being held in the same year. However, in Our Father, she is shown to have died in 1991 after giving the catalyst to Hiro, yet the meeting between Kaito and Noah was revealed to take place in 1992, in Hell's Angel, suggesting that the events of Our Father, including Ishi's death, would also have occurred in 1992.

Trivia

  • In the cast commentary for Our Father, Masi Oka says that "Ishi" is a Japanese word meaning "stone".
