Learning the business from his father Norman Howell, Kanin performed stunts in films such as and Dances with Wolves, Radio Flyer, Live Wire, Wyatt Earp, A Pig's Tale, The Postman, Texas Rangers, Pearl Harbor, The Last Castle, Rose Red, and Murder by Numbers. After acting in 2003's Secondhand Lions, he decided to pursue the acting side of his career more thoroughly, acting in films such as Death Sentence, Mr. Brooks, Hell Ride, Aces 'N' Eights, Venus & Vegas, and Undone.
