In 1994, Mr. Gutierrez takes his two sons Oscar and Carlos to a wrestling match featuring El Vengador. When his sons start to argue about the authenticity of the match, Mr. Gutierrez tells Oscar to leave his brother alone and let Carlos believe in something.
Mr. Gutierrez locks up Gutierrez and Sons for the day and starts to walk home with his son Oscar. He encourages Oscar to ask Elena out to prom, but Oscar is unsure that she likes him. They are then confronted by a man who tried and failed to bribe Gutierrez's father Luis to lose a wrestling match. The man tells Mr. Gutierrez that he will use him to "send a message" to Luis. Oscar steps up to defend his father, but Mr. Gutierrez tells his son that he must not, in case anyone finds out that he is different. Mr. Gutierrez is beaten by the man and his two goons, and Oscar helps carry him home. When Luis asks them what happened, Mr. Gutierrez tells him to leave his family out of the trouble he gets into.
