In their quest to get to the United States, Maya and Alejandro Herrera visit Nidia at her home in Coatepeque, Guatemala, and seek help crossing into Mexico. A curandera and her daughter try to help Maya with her problem. The curandera announces that nothing could help Maya, and flees, arguing with Nidia as she leaves. Soon thereafter, Nidia and the twins leave the house for the Mexican border.
