 Patrollers are users who have been granted the specific ability to patrol edits, and thus quality check every edit made to the wiki. Patrolling edits helps ensure that each edit is reviewed by at least one person for any obvious mistakes. Selection of patrollers is dependent upon an administrator's view of a person's skill in distinguishing between edits that are appropriate and those that are not (e.g. info is misplaced or doesn't follow the style guidelines, etc.) and how the person typically handles the latter type of edit.

    • Baldbobbo joined Heroes Wiki in January 2007 and took on patrolling duties in May 2007.
  2. Catalyst (Contact Catalyst)
    • Catalyst joined Heroes Wiki in January 2009 and was added to the patrollers group in October 2009. Besides patrolling, Catalyst also likes watching characters' personality change over the events that occur and on another note, reading other users' fan fictions because of the hard work that gets put in to them.
  3. Citizen (Contact Citizen)
    • Citizen joined Heroes Wiki in March 2007 and was added to the patrollers group in December 2008. Besides patrolling, Citizen also likes to post at 9thwonders.com and is interested in reading other fans' reactions to the show.
  4. DocM (Contact DocM)
    • DocM joined Heroes Wiki in December 2006 and was added to the patrollers group in October 2008. Aside from patrolling, he is too busy teleporting all over the world and being unbelievably awesome at the exact same time. Some call him a legend, others call him a myth.     • HiroDynoSlayer joined Heroes Wiki in January 2007 and was added to the patrollers group in November 2008. HDS loves abilities and how Sci-Fi/Fantasy soundbites are embedded in the show.

    • Iheartheroes joined Heroes Wiki in April 2009 and was added to the patrollers group in October 2009. Besides patrolling, IHH loves Heroes, especially the story development throughout the series.

    • Irony joined Heroes Wiki in November 2008 and was added to the patrollers group in March 2009. Besides patrolling, Irony likes the graphic novels and seeing different portayals of characters, as well as seeing character development.
  9. Intuitive Empath (Contact Intuitive Empath)
    • Intuitive Empath joined Heroes Wiki in October 2008 and was added to the patrollers group in January 2009. IE (not the browser) likes when things are logical and make sense, and therefore likes to discuss the workings of abilities and to make sure theories aren't insane, he doesn't like poorly made theories, so he scrutinizes them heavily.

    • Jan Rodrigo joined Heroes Wiki in February 2009 and was added to the patrollers group in December 2009. Besides patrolling, Jan loves everything Heroes, especially likes characters' personality developments and story developments throughout the series.

    • Laughingdevilboy joined Heroes Wiki in January 2008 and was added to the patrollers group in March 2009. Besides patrolling, Laughingdevilboy likes to remove the red links that plague us all and look after the minor cast members and characters thats are sometimes forgotten.

    • Leckie joined Heroes Wiki in Febuary 2009 and was made a patroller in January 2010. Besides patrolling, Leckie likes to rewatch episodes from the early seasons to see if he has missed anything that could help with the wiki and to get rid of red links and stubs!

NileQT87 likes to immerse herself in minutiae, wax philosophical about character/plot development, correct misunderstandings, be a fangirl, create detailed calendar-based timelines, provide graphics, organize and supply quotes, and correct grammar and spelling.

    • Piemanmoo joined Heroes Wiki in January 2007 and was added to the patrollers group in January 2009. Besides patrolling, Pieman enjoys long walks on the beach followed by candlelight dinner improving templates and wikicode, managing the list of abilities, and writing terrible minifanfics.

    • Keith joined Heroes Wiki in September 2007 and was added to the patrollers group in October 2008.
  21. Psilaq Remake (Contact Psilaq Remake)
    • Psilaq joined Heroes Wiki in October 2007 and was added to the patrollers group in October 2009.
  22. Ricard Desi (Contact Ricard Desi)
    • Ricard Desi joined Heroes Wiki in October 2008 and was added to the patrollers group in January 2009. Besides patrolling, Ricard Desi also likes to build and modify games based on Heroes abilities. He is currently re-watching Heroes in order to unravel the perpetually-confusing timeline.

    • SacValleyDweller joined Heroes Wiki in June 2007 and was added to the patrollers group in February 2008. In addition to patrolling at Heroes Wiki, SVD is also active at the 9thwonders.com message boards.

    • Thrashmeister joined Heroes Wiki in May 2007 and was added to the patrollers group in October 2008. He enjoys participating in various discussions all over the Wiki, and likes to make sure his voice is heard. He has little tolerance for ignorance and people who lack common sense.

    • Tristan0709 joined Heroes Wiki in November 2008, and was added to the patrollers group in March 2009. He likes to edit the spoilers section.

    • Yoshi n1 joined Heroes Wiki in September 2009, and was added to the patrollers group in January 2010. Besides patrolling, he tries to get rid of all the red links and unused images.

Administrators

All administrators also assist in patrolling. Current Heroes Wiki administrators:

  • Admin (Contact Admin)
    • Admin founded Heroes Wiki in October 2006 and is responsible for administering the server and MediaWiki software. Admin also handles advertising and public relations with other sites.
  • MiamiVolts (Contact MiamiVolts)
    • MiamiVolts joined Heroes Wiki in March 2007 and was added to the patrollers group in February 2008. He was made an administrator in February 2009. MiamiVolts is interested in Wiki template programming, the naming of new abilities, and theory discussion.
  • Radicell (Contact Radicell)
    • Radicell joined in December 2007, became an active member in October 2008, and was made an administrator in October 2009. Radicell is interested in day-to-day editing and general quality control.
  • RyanGibsonStewart (Contact RyanGibsonStewart)
    • RyanGibsonStewart joined Heroes Wiki in November 2006 and was made an administrator in December 2006 as the site's continued growth necessitated a larger staff to administer. He frequently verifies difficult to obtain information on Heroes production staff directly with the staff to ensure complete and accurate information on them. This ability became infinitely easier when Ryan was hired to be a digital writer for Heroes, even creating content in the Heroes world. Ryan also handles public relations with other sites as well as with Heroes staff, especially after he conducts interviews with cast and crew members.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of an administrator are to:

  1. Handle article/file deletion requests according to the deletion policy
  2. Appropriately deal with acts of vandalism
  3. Appropriately deal with revert wars
  4. Assign new patrollers

Vandalism is the intentional malicious modification of a page. Examples include blanking out pages or inserting inflammatory comments. If someone inserts incorrect information onto a page, it's not inherently vandalism even if it affects a large number of pages.

Minor acts of vandalism that are not on-going should be dealt with by notifying the user on their talk page. If the vandalism continues, a ban may be placed on the user.

Major acts of vandalism such as maliciously blanking or inserting inflammatory messages on a large number of pages may be dealt with by an infinite ban, at an administrator's discretion.

Revert wars may arise from time to time when there's a differing opinion on content or how the content should be displayed. When you see a revert war appear to begin, encourage discussion of the changes on the article's talk page. Try to reach a consensus or a compromise.

Patrollers are members of the community who are able to mark individual edits to articles as having been "patrolled". This is a way to help ensure that edits are reviewed for basic correctness and helps catch obvious mistakes as early as possible. Administrators can designate someone as a patroller by adding the user to the "Patrollers" group using the user rights management page. Patrollers are chosen by administrators based on a candidate's experience distinguishing between edits that are appropriate and edits that should be changed.

Persuade, don't dictate. An administrator's opinion on an article doesn't inherently carry any more weight than anyone else's opinion. Respect the decisions of the community even if you don't agree with them personally. In the end this is just a wiki, don't take anything personally. :)

Remain civil. As an administrator even though your opinions carry the same weight, you're still held to a higher standard. With great power comes great responsibility afterall. Try to set a good example.

Be careful when deleting files. Most files for the localized versions of Heroes Wiki are located on the English site and the list of articles that link to that file will not include articles from the other localizations. When in doubt check the localized versions individually and make sure none of them are still using the file before deleting it. Having extra files doesn't hurt, but deleting one that's still in use does.

All administrators should add the administrator portal to their watchlist to be alerted to any issues that require the attention of an administrator.

Tips

  1. On differences pages and user contributions pages, there's a link to rollback edits. This link doesn't let the administrator provide a comment and it rolls back all sequential edits by the last editor, but the link on contribs is useful for mass vandalism. Administrators who use Firefox or another tabbed browser can just keep the tab with the contribs open and open the rollback link for each of the vandal's edits in a new tab (CTRL-click for Firefox or IE7). Using this method, major vandalism can be reverted in a matter of minutes. Nothing is quite as disheartening to a vandal.
  2. If an article is moved to an existing redirect, the history is moved, too (it shows up as moved "over redirect" in recent changes). If a vandal's actions include moving pages, this method works very well, provided the administrator works backwards through any moves. (Unneeded redirects should be deleted when finished.)
  3. On Recent Changes, "hide patrolled edits" will hide edits by administrators and edits that have been approved by administrators or patrollers. It is still recommended to review all changes to the wiki, but this makes it faster when there have been many recent changes.
  4. As for patrolling edits: clicking the "mark as patrolled" link (or pressing Alt+Shift+P in Firefox) on a difference (diff) page (or a new article page), the red exclamation point will go away and the article won't appear in the aforementioned view on Recent Changes. This makes it easy to see what has already been checked for basic correctness by an administrator or patroller.

Guidelines

  • Patrollers' edits are not automatically patrolled and individual patrollers cannot patrol their own edits. This difference allows patrollers to catch each other's mistakes.
  • Administrators are not infallible and reviewing administrators' edits is encouraged. However, administrators' edits are automatically patrolled and cannot be marked as patrolled.
  • If an edit was incorrect and not subsequently corrected, then patrollers should not mark the edit as patrolled; once the patroller or another editor fixes the erroneous edit(s), then it can be patrolled. This way, incorrect edits will get the attention of multiple patrollers or administrators so it's more likely to be fixed.
  • If a patroller has doubts whether an edit is correct or not, he is encouraged to skip marking it as patrolled and leave a comment on the related talk page if needed. This way the edit in question is more likely to be examined by another patroller or administrator who may be more certain whether the edit is correct or not.
  • Patrollers should check edits fully for such things as accuracy of facts, spelling, grammar, punctuation, layout, style, tense, perspective, etc. They should also make sure that polices are adhered to, such as no spoilers on non-spoiler pages, and removing speculation and theories from regular pages.
  • If a situation arises where it is needed to address a contributor either on an article's talk page or on the user's talk page, patrollers should do so in a kind and professional manner. They should state the facts, but do so in a way that is not overly aggressive, or containing judgmental language or anything that might be perceived as offensive.
  • When patrolling the edits of a new user, patrollers should remember that not all contributors are at the same level. It would be very unfortunate if new users or casual contributors were scared away because they were treated unkindly by a patroller. Often, patrollers will have to explain the same concept or principle to many different users, and the patroller should remember that new users may not be aware of Heroes Wiki's standards and policies. Additionally, they may be contributors to other wikis that have policies that are different than Heroes Wiki; patrollers should tread lightly when correcting the edits of others. Patrollers should let an administrator know if a user is not listening, is offensive, or is consistently violating Heroes Wiki policies so the matter can be reviewed.

Tips

  • In the list of recent changes, red exclamation marks (!) represent edits which have not yet been patrolled. Clicking on the "Hide patrolled edits" link will show only unpatrolled edits. To patrol an edit, click the "diff" or "last" link if the edit was for an existing article. On the diff page, click the link for [Mark as patrolled]. If the edit was creating a new page, there will not be a "diff" link; instead, click on the name of the article and the [Mark as patrolled] link will be on the bottom right. For redirect pages, the [Mark as patrolled] link often appears on the article being redirected to and not the redirect page itself.
  • For users with tabbed browsers, opening "diff" pages in multiple tabs is another quick way to patrol numerous pages. A patroller can easily navigate from tab to tab and patrol along the way (Ctrl+Tab, Alt+Shift+P, Ctrl+Tab, Alt+Shift+P, etc.).
  • For Firefox users, Alt+Shift+P is a quick shortcut for patrolling on "diff" pages. There are also multi-link opening add-ons/extensions such as Snap Links that enable opening multiple "diff" pages at the same time.
  • In Internet Explorer, Firefox and other browsers, shift-clicking the [Mark as patrolled] link will open the patrolled confirmation in a separate window. Holding down both ctrl and shift when clicking or middle-click opens the patrolled confirmation in a new tab instead of a separate window in Firefox and other tabbed browsers. This is handy for patrolling through several edits using "diff".
  • To see a log of all patrolled edits (including which patrollers patrolled them), see Special:Log/Patrol. Patrollers also have the option of seeing just recent unpatrolled edits by clicking "Hide patrolled edits" in the recent changes.
