Prologue: Fight

With the wind blowing through his hair, Renaud stood on the crash barrier of the bridge, thinking about his life. It had been meaningless, except for his prom date, Nathalie. Unfortunately she dumped him a week later.

He suddenly noticed that there wasn’t any traffic on the bridge, no one to stop him from making the leap. Renaud looked around and he could see barricades on both ends of the bridge and two people nearing his location.

The first one was a man, probably in his forties, wearing a black suit and glasses, with horned rims. The other was a blonde woman, who couldn’t be older than 25. She looke cute, but had a menacing look.

<Who are you? What do you want?>, Renaud asked. (Note: translated from Flemish)

“Renaud Van Beersel? You are to come with us, willingly or otherwise”, the man with the horn-rimmed glasses threatened.

Renaud tried to stall time: “You’re not from around here, or you wouldn’t speak English. So you don’t have any authority over me. The cops will be here soon.”

“That’s why you need to choose now”, he said, and while unholstering a taser he turned to his partner: “Now Elle, one last suggestion: when they are given the choice of fight or flight, ninety-nine times out of a hundred, we know they choose flight.”

His mind racing, Renaud could only think of one option: tackle the girl and get the hell of the bridge!

Before he realised, she had him in a wristlock. “This one appears to be a fighter, Mr. Bennet!”,she yelled triumphantically.

At that moment, Renaud started to feel something strange. He somehow knew the girl was special and he didn’t know why, but the first word that crossed his mind was: lightning. Anything could be helpful at the moment, he thought, when he suddenly felt a surge throughout his body and he knew what to do.

He focused on his twisted hand, forgetting everything else and suddenly a lightning bolt burst out, sending the blonde girl flying. She recovered directly, however, and laughed: “You surprised me there, that tingled.”

“Is this why you’re after me?”, Renaud asked, not knowing what else to say.

“We had suspisions that you were special; it seems we’re right about you”, the man answered, “we work for a Company that helps special people and we were sent to recruit you.”

“But my family, they will be worried sick about me.”

“Everything is covered, you were invited for a special exchange between our Armies. We read that, despite your high score, you were rejected because of a... spondylolisis, if I recall correctly?”

“It seems like your Company did their homework.”

“Yes, and they have a strict time schedule, we’re dropping this letter off at your parents’ home; our plane to New York leaves within an hour.”
