“Scotland Yard,” Officer Bonkin thought, pacing up and down outside of the building, “I’m on the biggest murder mystery in London since Jack the Ripper, but there is no connection between victims, there is not a single bit of DNA, no evidence, nothing! I’m working with the best of the police and even with all of their brainpower, we can’t think of anything. There are no motives, no mean, no connecting force. There is obviously something amiss here, but I can’t understand what it is. There is only one thing I can think of... last week, when we arrested a group if people who were in an explosion, they were different, freaks. One of them touched me, and knocked me out. I’ve gone through the security tapes a thousand time, all you can see is him grab my hand, and then a red glow and then, I’m on the floor, unconscious. Then, all you see is them disappear, they don’t run out, don’t hide, they just disappear. And now, the people who almost killed me are the people I need to help me most.” He walked into the gushing rain, just as a taxi pulls up. “Where to, my friend?” said the driver, “Islington,” replied Bonkin, encased in his own thoughts.
“What’s he up to?”
“With Claude, you never know,” replied Gabriel. Ten minutes later, he returned, with a bag filled with £10 notes.
“How did you get that!” exclaimed Derek. “We’re supposed to be inconspicuous, in the shadows.”
“It's fine,” replied Claude, relaxed, “When you’re in the Company, you learn things. I just stood behind this guy while he entered his PIN, then nabbed his card. Easy come, easy go.”
“How else are we going to get any money? How many of us work?”
“Well since we have money let’s go eat, I’m hungry and we need to relax,” said Irony.
They all went into a local corner shop. “Excuse me, do you sell the Cockney Chronicle?” asked Claude. "We will go for something to eat in a minute, I like to keep up to date with the news."
“That’d be 50p,” replied the cashier. “Have you heard about the new Jack the Ripper?”
“No,” replied Irony.
“Someone is murdering people in the same way that Jack the Ripper did.” As she was talking to him, she touched the side of the till and it opened on its own accord.
“How did you do that?” asked Irony,
“How did I do what?” asked the cashier, “I didn’t do anything.”
"You touched the side of the till and it opened," said Derek.
“It’s okay,” said Gabriel, making a small ball of electricity in his hand, “we’re special too, we wouldn’t turn in one of our own.”
“When I touch things, they turn on and off,” replied the cashier.
“What’s your name?” asked Irony.
“Jenny,” the cashier replied as they all introduced themselves.
“You should come and visit us,” said Claude, “we help people like you learn to control their abilities.”
“I’ll do that,” said Jenny, confident in the presence of others with powers.
They left the shop and as they were making their way back to the warehouse, they heard someone shout, “put your hands up!” It was Officer Bonkin.
“What do you want?” asked Claude.
“You’ve probably heard of the new Jack the Ripper.” They all nodded. “He’s special, like you. You knocked me out by touching me and you disappeared into thin air. You’re different, he is too, I need your help to stop him.”
“Or what?” asked Derek.
“Or, I can arrest you and if, this time you decide to teleport or fly or whatever, my gun will be ready.”
“Okay, we’ll help,” said Irony, “but what do you want us to do?”
“We need you to stop him. There is always DNA, but never a connecting force. We find one set of DNA and a body matches it a day later, stabbed, drowned anything, they all turn up dead.”
“Where do we go?” asked Derek.
“The next murder will be somewhere in Whitechapel, at 9:00, that’s all I know.”
