- Scott Sutherland begins summer school.
- Scott is contacted by Nathaniel and decides to help a friend in need.
I can’t believe I have to go to summer school. Fail one class and you have to waste a month and a half of your summer, Scott Sutherland thinks as he gets out of his car. I guess it’s not so bad, I mean, it's only two hours a day and I don’t have to get up as early as I do during the school year. But still, sitting around in a classroom is gunna be really boring.
Scott gets to his English class to find his teacher, Mr. Harrington, greeting students. “Good to see your smiling face, Scott.”
“You too, Mr. Harrington.”
Well, at least I didn’t get a teacher who completely hates me. He passed me back in sophomore year, but Mr. Ashby was much worse this year. Hopefully I won’t have to do too much work and Mr. Harrington will pass me again.
“All right students, we all know why we’re here, let’s get down to it. For the first twenty minutes I’m going to have you write down in a notebook why you are sitting here today. You don’t have to read it out loud, but just try to keep writing the entire time, okay?”
I’m here because Mr. Ashby hated me. Done. What should I write for the rest of the twenty minutes? I could just doodle… nah, that would be too obvious. I could just write about something personal… hmmm… the first time I healed someone was pretty personal. I wouldn’t want anyone reading that. Let’s see, it all started when I was with Sophia…
Half a year ago, Sophia and Scott are sitting in Scott’s backyard on the swing-set that was built for Scott when he was little. Scott is ranting about how he was experimented on as a mere baby, while Sophia consoles him. She tries to get him to see the silver lining of his situation: he can now heal the wounds of other people. He argues that he has never even tried it, and hopes he never will have to. Sophia argues that he needs to try, some day he might be in a position where he has no choice but to use it. Scott says he has no one to use it on. Sophia suggests he try it on her, pointing out the scar she got on the back of her leg when she was ten. She explains that she was helping her dad in the garage when she stumbled backwards and cut her leg on a nail sticking out of an old board. Scott cautiously places his hand on Sophia’s leg on concentrates all his energy on making the scar disappear, and, to his surprise, it does. He is overjoyed and, in his excitement, kisses Sophia. Both of them are shocked, and when Scott tries to apologize, Sophia tells him to be quiet and kisses him back. When they pull away, Scott smiles, saying…
“Scott, you need to leave now.”
Wha-? Oh, it’s Nate. Scott gathers his thoughts and replies to him: What are you talking about? I can’t just walk out of summer school, Nate.
“You need to help Max, he’s being hunted, probably by the government ”
“Maybe they want to experiment on him, I don’t know, but you need to help him. Get out somehow, go get your brother, and have him find Max.”
…Alright, but this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense…
“I know it doesn’t; thanks for doing this.”
Great, my first day of summer school, and I already have to leave. I’m not complaining, but… should I tell him a family member died? Nah, too dramatic. I could just ask to go to the bathroom and walk out… Would I get in too much trouble for that? Probably, but right now it’s my best option and if Max’s life is potentially on the line, it’s definitely worth it. Scott raises his hand. “Mr. Harrington, can I go to the bathroom? It’s urgent.”
“Fine, but make it fast, Scott.”
“Thanks.” Scott walks out of the room, ripping out the piece of paper from his notebook that he had just written on, and heads toward the main doors of the school. Thankfully there aren’t any teachers hanging around the main doors. I can walk out unnoticed. Scott quietly closes the door behind him and walks quickly back to the parking lot. I just hope Alex is home.
Twenty minutes later, Scott pulls up to his house and jumps out of the car. Looks like mom already left for work; at least I don’t have to make up an excuse for leaving summer school. “Alex! Where are you?”
“Scott? Didn’t you just leave, like, an hour ago?”
Scott runs into the living room to find his little brother doing god-knows-what on the computer. “Don’t worry about that, we have to go.”
“To find Max, his life is probably in danger! I need you to find him for me.”
“What? How do you know?”
“Nate ‘contacted’ me, he said the government is hunting him, or something. Come on, we need to go.”
“Alright, give me your phone.” Alex says as they run outside to the car.
“Who could you want to call at a time like this?”
“It’s not a phone call, I’m going to have your phone track his phone. It should lead us right to him.”
“Okay, here, but if you mess up my phone, I’m making you get me a new one.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. Okay… looks like we have to head straight. I’ll tell you where to go.”
“What happens if the people chasing Max are there when we find him?”
Whoa, never really thought about that one. “I don’t know… I guess we’re gunna have to fight.”
