Tables of contents

Is there a way to specify the widths of the TOCs on pages? Also, is there a way to cause the TOC to be hidden (or "collapsed") by default? —Radicell 05:22, 1 November 2009 (EST)

  • Sort of. To specify the width of the TOC, you have to use a TOC template. Try adding {{tocleft|100px}} to make a super thin TOC. Making it wider than normal (like {{tocleft|700px}}) will only pad whitespace to the right of the TOC, not make the actual box wider. As for a TOC that is hidden as a default, we don't have anything like that here. However, take a look at Wikipedia's custom template for a hidden TOC. I'm not sure if we have the capabilities to recreate that here or not—we might, I just don't know. Hope that helps. Let me know if you'd like me to do a bit of further investigating for you. :) — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 11:34, 1 November 2009 (EST)
    • One additional thing, which I think Radicell might have been alluding to re. hiding the TOC: You can suppress a TOC from appearing on a page by adding "__NOTOC__" (minus the quotes) on a line by itself on the page.—MiamiVolts (talk) 00:09, 3 November 2009 (EST)

Lost Page

Hi Ryan, sorry if bother you but I ask you something. A few days ago, on this site I found a page on all pairs of agents of the company (ex. Noah-Elle, Noah-Meredith...) you may post them here the link to the page that I can not find more? Thanks, TanderixUTSPD

About a week ago I asked you to delete some userpages I wasn't using before and I forgot to ask if you could delete the unused images from them as well. It was only when catalyst said to me that they were not properly sourced that I remembered they even existed, so could you delete them for me. Thanks. Just checking, is the image I uploaded in the correct size and category? also, would it be considered a spoiler to add the "episodes directed" section now? - Jenx222 | U · T · CHTC 11:30, 1 November 2009 (EST)

  • Correct size, check. Correct category, check. (Good find on the image, by the way!) I don't consider the director of an episode to be a spoiler—we've already added that template to other directors (like Nate Goodman and Jim Chory) and writers (like Rob Fresco and Mark Verheiden). I think it's fine to add the template. — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 11:43, 1 November 2009 (EST)

Sorry To Bother You...

But I didn't fully understand the help on adding images to an article. You see, I just want to add images to illustrate my user page, but is there any way to copy images from Heroes Wiki and use them? Thanks for the help.—Hiroman 12:38, 2 November 2009 (EST)

  • Plus, (and please forgive my technical ignorance), please could you tell me how to make an info box (Well, I think it's called an infobox- I'm talking abouth the large box on the right of character and user pages). Thanks again—Hiroman 13:08, 2 November 2009 (EST)

HI Tag

Just finished adding Heroes Interactive:Once Upon a Time in Texas, so you're up again next week if that's okay. P.S.: Don't forget to add Heroes Interactive:Strange Attractors (someone started the page as a stub but didn't put any of the transcript).—MiamiVolts (talk) 00:13, 3 November 2009 (EST)

Matt Jr Youngest?

Is matt jr still the youngest to have an ability. With the new Istory, is Draph or his twin brother, not the youngest to have an ability. Or does this not count because it is not from a cannon source? —mc_hammark 12:35, 4 November 2009 (EST)

  • Only the information from the iStory is considered canonical (or near-canonical, as the case may be). The information from Heroes: Survival is not canonical. — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 21:59, 4 November 2009 (EST)

Draph

Hey, as you've noticed, people are raising issue with Phoenix Mimicry. It was not my intent to create something unreasonable and I just thought it was something fairly original. What is your opinion? I would be fine with changing my Survival story for simplicity and 'canoness' if you feel its best for everyone.

  • Personally, I like the ability (which is one reason I helped recommend Draph to be a crossover character)...but that's just my opinion, which really has nothing to do with whether we consider the ability to be part of the Heroes canon on this wiki or not. Nor does it matter what other people think. Fans always get up in arms about certain things, and there's not much that can be done about it. I think there was a lot of unnecessary rudeness on the ability's talk page, and for that people should be ashamed. But beyond that, Draph and phoenix mimicry were featured in an iStory, so they are from a canon (or rather, a near-canon) source, and should absolutely be included in the wiki, of course. As for the backstory that you wrote at Heroes: Survival, that's a secondary source, and not considered a canon (or near-canon) source. That information can be on the wiki, but it should remain in the notes section of Draph's page, and the notes section of the ability page. Only the information featured in the iStory itself belongs in the main body of the articles.

By the way, congratulations on being featured as the third crossover character of this iStory! I think Zach Wilson did a great job synthesizing the background information you wrote at Heroes: Survival. You should be proud! :) — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 07:50, 5 November 2009 (EST)

    • Thank you, I was extremely pleased! I have noticed other people adding Survival info to other pages. I've been trying to take it down but it still gets put back up. So I was wondering if you could be a more authoritative matter on those issues, namely Ability Replication and Telekinesis. Also, for some of the character information, can that still go into the "about" section, as I have seen all other crossover characters do? (EDIT) plus, if you ever see something that should not be in any of the pages, please change it immediately, (as you prob would have done anyway) I just want Draph and his pages to be the most canon as possible for an istory character.
      • Will do, Draph. I've read the iStory, but I haven't gotten around to doing much editing this week—my wife and I have been in and out of the hospital with contractions. The baby should come any time now. I wouldn't be surprised if she's born this weekend! — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 21:48, 5 November 2009 (EST)
        • Well, hot dog, congrats! I don't think it should be that much of a problem anymore, the changes have seemingly stopped re-emerging. Although, Draph is still under some heavy fire for being a mimic and having an unique ability. :( o well. haha. Congrats again! Draphoenix 22:47, 5 November 2009 (EST)
          • Thanks! Let me know if you need my help with anything. :) — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 22:53, 5 November 2009 (EST)
            • Oh, about the "about" section, to what degree can HSG stuff go into there. I guess if you could quickly glance at Draph's page and let me know what I can do to make it better and canonical. I understand you are busy, but hopefully it shouldn't take too long.Draphoenix 23:20, 5 November 2009 (EST)

Layout Help

I'm updating my userpage and I need to create a floating box. If you have a minute could you give me a hand, I need to make the sidebar appear side by side with the title bars, User:Jenx222/Sandbox/Userpage I'd appreciate the help, thanks - Jenx222 | U · T · CHTC 05:03, 5 November 2009 (EST)

  • On that page, you have the width set (twice) to be 100%. Take that out, because that's making the table you've created span the entire page. Not good. Instead, add in class="infobox", which will float the entire box on the right side of the page. I also suggest you take a look at other infoboxes (like template:character box or template:user infobox), and then copy the pertinent codes from those pages, and customize it so it fits what you want. If you're still having trouble, let me know. — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 07:57, 5 November 2009 (EST)
    • Still having trouble, the first 100% width is for the page background and the second is for the title bar. My box is already using the infobox class but it still will not line up with the title bars, any thoughts?, if it's to complicated don't worry, I'll just change the design, lol - Jenx222 | U · T · CHTC 08:39, 5 November 2009 (EST)
      • Never mind, I've just used a bit of CSS instead, all sorted, thanks anyway :P - Jenx222 | U · T · CHTC 08:58, 5 November 2009 (EST)

About my template

I wasn't trying to do something with spoilers, I was trying to create a template (rather unsuccessfully), that would allow for text to appear as black bars or "censored". I wanted the text to only be revealed by moving the cursor over it, like this: http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Template:C . I'm not sure how to do that, but I was trying to figure it out, which is why it currently doesn't do anything. If you could help out in any way, (again, I'm not doing anything with spoilers) it would be much appreciated. —Bender 22:22, 5 November 2009 (EST)

Consensus

Hey, about the consensus check on Trevor's ability. We do have enough information to make a decision as it stands, we've seen a clear example of what the ability does and we also have a description from the writers. It's very doubtful we will ever get to know more about it, but what we do know is, this is an ability and this is all it does (shatter glass), It's speculative to say it would have even worked on Sylar. I think this is justified grounds for a consensus check, what do you think? - Jenx222 | U · T · CHTC 05:41, 6 November 2009 (EST)

  • There is no consensus for a name. I believe I left a comment on that talk page last night. — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 15:15, 6 November 2009 (EST)
    • I think I may have worded my explanation incorrectly, I meant that there is enough information to run a consensus check, clearly as it stands there is no consensus but I'm sure in time a consensus can be reached. - Jenx222 | U · T · CHTC 17:46, 6 November 2009 (EST)
      • I appreciate your enthusiasm and optimism, but time has only shown that our community is split on the name. The article's talk page itself serves as a consensus check. However, a formal consensus check was conducted when the ability first debuted a year ago (see here). It was painfully obvious that there was no consensus on a name back then. Here we are, a year later with absolutely no new information, and there is still no consensus. However, a formal consensus check was held in recent days (see here). It is still clear as day that the community does not agree on a name. I believe that this is because we have not found a name that is non-speculative. But whatever the reason, more than one consensus check has been conducted (when only one was needed), and both have concluded that there is no consensus. With no new information about the ability, another consensus check would be superfluous. — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 18:37, 6 November 2009 (EST)
        • Can you tell me exactly how blasting is speculative? It's exactly what he did to the glass. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 18:40, 6 November 2009 (EST)
          • A blast is (or connotes) a strong gust or stream of wind or air. I don't know if that's how Trevor blew up those glasses. But regardless, that's really not the point of my post above. The point of the above post is that there is no consensus on a name, and no need for another consensus check. But speculative or not, it's just my own idea that the reason our community can't come to a consensus is because there is no non-speculative name, or at least our community perceives that there is no non-speculative name. — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 18:45, 6 November 2009 (EST)
            • What we need is something that gives the idea of exploding. "Exploding", "bursting", and "blowing up" come to mind. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 19:53, 6 November 2009 (EST)

A Few Things...

Hey Ryan. God it's been ages since I've spoken to you - but hi. Sorry about not being on the wiki much lately, I've been busy with school, but it's starting to clear up now, so I'll be on a bit more. Firstly, you might want to watch Draphphoenix. He is the creator or Draph from the istory, and with the raging argument going on with Phoenix mimicry he seems to have tried to correct himself, but took it a bit to far, he deleted all the information from the page here. I'm not sure if I'm right to be correcting, but he deleted all the info and changed anything without any given consenus, so I'd thought I'd change it back. I don't think he needs to be blocked, but a just a heads up - he seems nice, but I'd be annoyed too if so many people were slamming my ability. On this subject, congrats on becoming a istory writer! Just wondering, how do you pick people from Heroes Survival to go into istory. Personally, I'm a fan of phoenix mimicry, but others, lets say not so much. Also, when you choose them from survival, do you make everything they say 'canon' - because I can see this getting confusing. Taking Draph into account for example, his twin died in the womb and he acquired without having an ability to mimic other abilities. I'm not sure if I'm making myself clear, but the whole thing is starting to confuse me now. Thanks —IronyUTC CH 15:22, 6 November 2009 (EST)

  • Hey, Irony. Thanks for the heads up about Draphoenix. He contacted me above about some of his concerns. People have been unnecessarily rude about his creation, which I just don't understand. Regardless, he shouldn't have blanked the page about the power, even if it was something he thought of originally. The power now belongs to the world of Heroes, not to any individual. I think you're right though, that in this case it's not an act of vandalism, but just a good guy who got frustrated with rude things people were saying about him.

I'm actually not an iStory writer, but I work very closely with Zach Wilson, who is the writer of the iStory. The rest of us help, support, approve, and collaborate with Zach. I am not the only one who chooses H:S characters to cross over, but I am one of the people. Personally, I look for characters who have cool powers and cool backstories. There's no science to it—when I see something that strikes me as cool, I note it. Zach has a few different criteria, as he's trying to look for a character that will fit in his story, as well as be a "cool" character.

As for the canonicity of H:S, I covered that information a bit covered here, but I'll certainly talk more about it, because I don't want anybody to be confused by the levels of what's "official" and what's not. :) The information created by fans is not canon. Only the stories told in the iStories, graphic novels, etc. is canon (or near-canon, as the case may be). With very few exceptions (like pictures and page titles), we only put the information from Heroes: Survival in the notes. It's the information Zach (and other writers) use as a basis to create the character in the canon or near-canon works. But all the "extra" information that wasn't actually included in the iStory should be kept in the notes. That also means that if a character from H:S is featured in the iStory, but he doesn't demonstrate a power, he should not be considered an evolved human. The information about his power should be kept in the notes.

    I hope that long-winded explanation helps! :) — RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 15:36, 6 November 2009 (EST)

    • But if only the stuff that appears in the istory is canon, does that not mean that his ability name is not cannon? —mc_hammark 15:49, 6 November 2009 (EST)
