Volume 1 - In The Shadows

Where does it come from—this quest, this need to solve life's mysteries when the simplest of questions can never be answered? Why are we here? What is the soul? Why do we dream? Perhaps we'd be better off not looking at all. Not delving, not yearning. But that's not human nature. Not the human heart. That is not why we are here.

The Story

"Where's Derek Simmonds? He was supposed to meet us here half an hour ago," whispered Gabriel Bishop.

"I was just wondering that, I'm starting to get nervous. It could be a Company trap," replied Irony.

"Don't worry about it," said Claude, "the Company doesn't operate in this way; if they wanted to trap us they'd burst in all guns blazing. Not in public, it's never in public and you can't get more public than the tower of London."

A few minutes passed, but nobody came. "It's four o'clock, I think he has arrived," said Claude, being sure not to directly look in the direction of the man who just walked in.

"It could be him," said Gabriel.

"Um, excuse me, are you Claude?" asked a nervous Derek Simmonds.

"Depends whose asking."

"I phoned you yesterday, you said you know people with abilities too," Derek responded.

"Yes, yes I do," said Claude, holding his hand up and making it go invisible, while Gabriel Bishop made the pencil in his hand turn to gold. "What's your power?" asked Claude.

"I can make electricity, just by clicking my fingers and it flies out."

"Why did you phone us? Have you got a problem with your power?" asked Irony.

"Yes, can we go somewhere else? I really need to show you. It's hard to explain," replied Derek.

Half an hour later, Claude, Gabriel Bishop, Irony and Derek arrived at an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of London. "So what's the problem with your power then?" Gabriel Bishop asked.

"Whenever I use it, I discharge. I release so much it is hard for me to stop," replied Derek.

"Maybe I can help," said Irony. "My power is to reduce the powers of others, if you learn to use it while it is weakened you should be able to use it when it is at the usual strength."

Claude and Irony were showing Derek Simmonds how to use his power when Gabriel Bishop saw something out of the corner of his eye. A moment later, he caught sight of something in the shadows. Suddenly, a Company agent burst into the warehouse. Gabriel Bishop stopped time and saw the Company agent, who was just starting to release fire from his hands. Gabriel Bishop, seeing the agent go for Derek, used telekinesis to make a door crash into the agent. The fight raged on with Gabriel Bishop always staying a step up from the agent. But Gabriel Bishop slipped up, he let the agent hit him with a burst of fire. The agent, who was just about to scorch Gabriel Bishop, released a cataclysmic burst of fire; however, just as it was about to hit Gabriel Bishop it trickled away into a tiny flame. The agent looked round, he saw that Irony had grasped his arm and was draining his power. Gabriel Bishop and Claude proceeded to tie up the agent, and Irony, Derek, Gabriel Bishop and Claude left, with the agent bound up inside their van.

The Story

The Company agent shrieked as he was tortured by Gabriel Bishop. Gabriel electrified him as Derek and Irony hurled buckets of water over him. "Why are you here!" yelled Claude.

"I was sent by Mrs. Petrelli to bag and tag Derek."

"Why me! What have I ever done that gives you the right to come and attack me?" exclaimed Derek "Why me..."

Suddenly, the agent regained a smile on his face, saying, “you better watch out, electricity can only hold me out for so long.” Gabriel then, deciding that electricity was nothing compared to this Company agent's training, grabbed a strand of his hair. He then used alchemy to turn that stand of hair into gold, and said, “now either you talk, or I’ll do this to your whole body.” At that moment, the agent's partner came up behind them. The agent fired six rounds, straight into Gabriel’s chest, but he healed momentarily. However, they both escaped. Irony, Derek, Gabriel and Claude pursued them through the streets of London, but they were Company agents, and even with Gabriel and Claude’s training they managed to escape. “Where did they go?” asked Derek.

"We lost them, they escaped in the alleyways,” responded Claude. “This could be dangerous. Now they know we’re working together they’re going to send more agents, and unless we find help, we will be easy pickings for them," said Claude, disheartened.

"Don't worry," said Gabriel, "we know how they work, we know their mindset, they won’t be back for a while. You know the Company, all they do before operations is plan, they never rush into anything.".

They decided to return to the warehouse, where Gabriel and Irony took Derek into a room to help him learn to control his ability. “So remember,” said Irony, “if you’re about to discharge, force your hands together, this way the current is more focused”. Irony then released Derek from his power, letting him take full control of it. “Try it now.”

Derek used his power, at first everything seemed good, Derek used his power and he didn't discharge, but then Gabriel Bishop came in and knocked over a chair. The shock caused Derek to overload. Irony tried to touch him, but as he was about to, Derek let out an outburst of energy causing Irony to be hurled backwards. While retreating to the next room Irony shouted, “how are we going to stop him? If we don’t, he’s going to die.” Gabriel Bishop knew he could reach him, thanks to his ability of rapid cellular regeneration, but had no way of stopping him when he did.

“Turn the room into gold, Gabriel, if you can the charge from the room will stop, which should allow Irony to reach him.” Gabriel did this, but instead of this weakening Derek's ability, it made it stronger, canceling out the room's charge.

“Irony, you've got to try and stop him,” bellowed Claude, struggling to be heard over the noise.

“I've got an idea," said Irony, "if I use my ability while walking toward him I might be able to create a shield for myself, negating the effects of his ability.”

“But when you get closer to him, you will have to stop the shield to weaken him,” said Gabriel. “You might be killed!”

“It’s worth trying,” said Irony, walking into the room. Then, Irony managed to stop Derek, knocking him out in the process.

"I need you to help him regain consciousness. Then I want you to train him," shouted Claude.

"Sure thing," said Irony.

The Story

Claude, where have you been?” asked Derek.

“I can’t tell you that; it’s strictly private, between me and two of my friends.”

“What do you mean? Private? We’re supposed to be a team,” replied Derek.

“We are,” assumed Claude, “I just don’t need to tell you about this.”

Derek, eschewed, walked over to Irony and Gabriel. “Who’s our next assignment then?” he asked.

“A man called Richard Gold,” responded Irony, “and his power is alchemy.”

“Opportune name, then.”

“I guess,” said Gabriel, “but then you’d be called Derek Lightning.”

“Do you know where he is? He seems to be pretty elusive.”

“All we know is that ever since he got his Midas touch, he’s shot up from living in a one bedroom apartment to being the biggest gold dealer in the South of England, with his assets quickly expanding.”

An hour later and the team were sitting in their van outside of Hyde Park, watching Richard Gold on a picnic with his wife and three children. “Nothing strange here, what are we looking for? He just seems to be using his power for his own avail.”

“What you have to learn Derek, is that the Company doesn’t care if it doesn’t have solid evidence, they will take you, test you and slap you in Level 3.”

“Anyway Claude, why did you have to steal this crappy old van, we could’ve stolen a jag.”

“Being inconspicuous, it’s all that matters. If we are in a jag and he sees us, he is going to suspect us much more than in an old van.”

“Wait, wait, wait. Blonde, two o’clock, she’s been staring at us for the last two or three minutes.”

“Oh no,” said Claude. “Elle Bishop, a Company agent, Bob’s daughter, very powerful.”

“Is this an assignment?” asked Irony.

“No,” replied Gabriel Bishop, “there isn’t another one of them and Elle was never trusted to go on missions alone.” At that moment Elle looked straight into Gabriel’s eyes and smashed her hand down, electrifying the van in the process, causing its petrol tank to explode.

“Guys, guys are you okay?” shouted Gabriel Bishop, “I must be the only one who survived, I must have healed from the burns.” Gabriel looked around and saw that everyone was fine, nobody was even injured.

“How did this happen? Why aren’t we dead?” asked Derek.

“Hey guys, how you doing?” replied Abigail, who had encased them in a force field. “I was going to leave but, you know the whole thing with you exploding and me saving you.”

“Very funny Abigail, How did you know where we were?” said Irony, clearly annoyed.

"Since we left the Company, we have still been keeping track of their missions, we were keeping tabs on Elle to make sure she wasn't going to do anything stupid. And once you've been a Company agent, you know when you're being watched, and when someone's doing the watching." As she was saying this the police surrounded the van, headed by Officer Bonkin.

“Step away from the vehicle, put your hands up!”

They all did as instructed, were handcuffed and brought to Kensington Police Station. At the police station they were brought into a room and interrogated. "How did you escape? That blast would have killed most people, and you all escaped without a scratch on you," said the captain.

"Luck," said Irony.

"Chance," said Gabriel.

"Fortune," said Derek.

"So," said Officer Bonkin, "we have... Gabriel Bishop, Robert Smith, Abigail Grisby, Derek Simmonds and Claude Rains, the invisible man huh? Well then," said Officer Bonkin, "your van was destroyed, none of you had a scratch on you and you won’t tell me anything. I can only assume this was an insurance scam, so I'm going to have to nick you."

"Wait!" said Irony, racking his brain to think of a plan, "can I talk to you alone, for just a few seconds?"

"Are you going to tell me about what happened?"

"Hand on heart," said Irony, while leaving the room with Officer Bonkin. Irony grabbed his arm and drained his power, exactly like he would to a person with an ability. But, as Officer Bonkin didn't have an ability Irony was draining his life-force. As he drained it further, Officer Bonkin, became weak, his skin shriveled, his eyes glossed over and his brain went into recession causing him to become immobile. “Let’s go!” shouted Irony.

The Story

“Wait!” yelled Gabriel, “grab me, I’ll teleport out of here. Claude and Abigail run, I can only teleport two at a time."

At that moment a police officer burst into the room. “Put your hands up! Get down on the floor slowly.”

“Grab me!” bellowed Gabriel. Everyone did.

“Put your hands up, or I’ll shoot, look what you did to Bonkin, he's out cold!”

Nobody let go and Gabriel squinted in concentration. The policeman fired.

“Aaargh!” howled Abigail. Irony went to grab her, but he was too late, Gabriel had teleported and Abigail was left behind. They materialised back into the warehouse.

“We need to save her,” said Derek, “imagine what it’s going to do to Lee”.

"Where's Claude? It's been twenty minutes," complained an anxious Gabriel, "I hope he escaped." Just then Claude burst through the door. "Claude! where's Abigail?"

"She’s okay, half dead, but she’ll survive. She managed to deflect the bullet with a force field, it was heading straight for her heart, but it hit her in the arm. The police grabbed her and taken her to St. Edmund's Hospital, but she’s being transferred to Wormwood Scrubs tomorrow. She’s being heavily guarded tonight so we’ll never get to her. We will have to make the escape next week."

"Great, we lost the guy, exploded in a van, got nicked, got Abigail shot and got arrested," said Gabriel.

All of a sudden, a woman entered; she ran in so quickly everything in the room flew up, as if it were in a vortex. “Hi, I’m Daphne. I’m here to bring you a message from Mr. Petrelli, he’s set up a new breed of the Company, called Pinehearst.”

“Let me guess, Daphne Millbrook, speedster, Lawrence, Kansas,” said Gabriel.

“How did you--” said Daphne.

Company,” replied Claude. “So that’s what Peter’s been up to, didn’t think he had it in him to set up a company.”

“Oh no, it’s Arthur Petrelli, not Peter. Anyway, gotta run, here’s our card,” she said, and quick as a flash, left the room.

“So who is Arthur Petrelli, then?” asked Derek.

“Well I don't really know, Arthur Petrelli was one of the 12 founders of the Primatech Company,” said Gabriel, “but he died about a year ago.”

“It could be someone like Candice, with the power of illusion, or a shape shifter like James Martin,” replied Claude.

“It could be a very powerful telepath, but that person would have to extremely experienced, and I don’t think anyone is that powerful,” said Irony.

“Wait,” said Claude, “when I was training Peter he told me about a cheerleader who could rapidly heal, Bennet’s girl, what was her name? Oh, Claire, that was it.”

“But Arthur had been dead for a year; could Claire’s blood really do that?” questioned Gabriel.

“Wait, wait, wait,” said Derek, clearly frustrated. “Who is Peter?”

“Peter Petrelli, he has empathic mimicry, he exploded over Kirby Plaza, almost released the Shanti virus, and shot his brother Nathan.”

“Wait, we’ve been working together and you haven’t told me anything about this!”

“No.”

“Well here’s what you’re going to do,” pointing at Claude and Gabriel. Derek was getting angry. “You’re putting us in danger because of the Company agents, you almost got Abigail killed. Now you’re going to tell me your history, everything about it.”

“Okay," said Claude, "it all started when..."

The Story

"It all started when I was young, around 16, in the eclipse of ‘74," said Claude.

“I used my power for the greater good, but I was reckless with it, a few people saw me, rumors shot up and the Company bagged and tagged me.

While I was being held in Level 2, Linderman, who was the company chairman at the time, offered me a job. In those days I still believed that the Company did good, helped get the criminals off the streets, so I agreed to take the job. In the 80’s, I worked with a man called Haram, we worked together for about five years, but he retired because of a terrible mission which we shared.

Then, as I was quite an experienced Company agent, I was assigned a rookie to train, who was my new partner, Noah Bennet. Noah soon became the best of the best, he was Mr. Morally Grey, he didn’t care about what he did. The mission, in which I decided to leave, was one in Russia. Noah I were sent to find an evolved human known only as “the Russian” and a member from the Russian branch of the Company called Ivan Spektor decided to tag along. The way they were treating him was inhumane, it was sick. We followed him onto a subway and found out his power was age shifting but we lost him so we headed to where his older form worked, in a market. We searched for him, but Noah and I stuck together, we didn’t know it but Ivan was following us.

I saw the Russian, but said it was all clear, Ivan saw him and ever since then, the Company suspected me. In 2006 I helped hide an evolved human, the Company found out and they led me out to a bridge with Noah and he shot me twice.”

“I’m sorry,” replied Derek, “I never knew.”

“My history,” whispered Gabriel, “is a bit more complicated. When I was young, I was recruited to the Company. My first partner was a man named Graham; he killed himself after about a week of our partnership.

But I soon became a fully fledged agent, I became respected amongst the "specials" in the company. One day, my new partner and I were on a mission to bag and tag a person who had the ability of illusion. We were instructed to bring her in but as I was going to her location I met a Japanese man, called Hiro, who was looking for Isaac Mendez, so I pointed him in the right direction.

Anyway me and my partner captured a girl called Candice Willmer, but she has had many faces and names in her time. A few months later, as I was becoming more powerful, I had developed my power of freezing. I could now use it at a distance and I could even choose to revert frozen people, which proved very useful in bagging and tagging. Then one day I was asked to join a different division. This division was “two of them, None of us”, the people we were sent after were extremely powerful, they were Level 5 "specials". These people could barely be stopped by two of us, so the Company didn’t want to risk the normal humans' lives. In this division I was teamed up with Frederick, the agent who is attacking us, the combination of hot and cold allowed us to become the best team of the whole Company. But then we were sent on a mission that would change my future; we were sent to find a woman who fired energy blasts, we went in and she blasted me with her power, I tried to overcome it but I accidentally teleported to Kirby Plaza, while there I saw many evolved humans fighting Sylar. As they were fighting I started to understand how they all thought and acted, there was Matt Parkman, a cop who never thought that he was good enough, Hiro Nakamura, an office drone who just wanted to help save the world and become a hero. Claire Bennet, a cheerleader who couldn’t bring herself to shoot her uncle and Peter Petrelli, a nurse who just wanted to help people.

As I understood them, I began to understand all their powers, and then I learned I could access them as well. But, as Peter had not been able to control induced radioactivity, neither could I, I looked down my hands started to glow a bright red, I was about to explode but Elle appeared behind me and electrified me. She took me back to the Company and put me straight into Level 5.

Bob came and explained that I had been gone two months and that he had done experiments on my blood and that they had found out that I had the same ability as Sylar, and that mine was more advanced so I didn't need to cut open the heads of evolved humans. He told me that the Company knew about Peter exploding and Elle was sent there to make sure everything went to plan but Elle had spotted me and realised what was happening. I asked them why I was in Level 5, all they said was I was now a security risk.

I managed to get control of some of my powers and escape and ever since then the Company has been trying to capture me and I vowed I would never to go back to the Company again.”

The Story

"Derek, this is Dave," said Irony. "He is a friend of Gabriel's from his Company days, he has a nifty ability that Gabriel thought would help us rescue Abigail."

"Hi there, I hope I can help. So how are we going to get in?”

“Well, Gabriel and I have been doing some research. It seems that the only guards they have are not very bright and seem to be the ones that are not very good at their job. But there are only a few of them, ten max.”

“That’s strange,” replied Dave, ”high security prison, hardly any guards?”

“What’s stranger,” replied Derek, “is that there have been a quite a few breakout attempts recently and none were successful. It seems that every person on every breakout was found to be running down the same corridor, until the police and guards came in and captured them. Each one said they went round in circles, all 26 of the prisoners that tried to break out said they all went round and round.”

“So you think there is an EV helping them?” questioned Dave.

“That’s what we were thinking; we really need you to paralyse the guards with your ability, so if the EV's ability requires close contact, then I should be able to stop him. But otherwise we will need Derek to electrocute him,” elaborated Irony, while pulling into the prison in a new stolen car.

“Right, let’s go.” They walked up to the guard at the front desk. “Hi, we’re here to visit Abigail Grisby”, said Dave.

“Visiting hours have finished, no visitors after 3 o’clock. Come back tomorrow.”

"Well that’s a shame," said Dave, pointing his finger at the guard and using his ability, “I guess that you are just going to wait here, while we go in and see her."

“What cell is Abigail in?” demanded Dave.

"What have you done to me?" replied the officer.

"Tell him what cell or my friend here can do a lot worse!" replied an angered Irony, pointing at Derek as he created some electricity in his hand.

“OK, she's on the fourth floor, in cell 72,” said the scared officer.

“Where do the people get trapped?” asked Derek.

“In the second corridor, after the entrance.”

“As soon as we think we’ve seen something twice, we need to stop and find who’s doing it.” They went past the paralyzed police officer and entered the stairwell. "Remember, it is this floor that is the one that people get trapped on," shouted Dave as they reached the second floor. As they were walking down the corridor, Derek noticed a plaque which he’d seen before. He nudged Irony and Dave, and said, “I think the EV is around. I have already seen that plaque. We don’t know what his power is but we’ve been here before.”

“Keep on going, but keep your eyes open, look for him,” replied Irony.

After five minutes, Dave whispered, “stop, look at cell two, he's looking at us, and he has got a gun.”

“I don't think I can use my power on him from here. I know I am going to see if I can blast my power, but you two will be weakened like the EV so be weary. We need to focus on getting to Abigail. Hopefully he will follow us when he regains his strength so we can take him down and get out of this place. But after I do this I won’t be able to use my power at all because I will need to recharge.” Irony took a few breaths of air, he then raised his arms and focused with all his might and released a blast of ability-diminishing light. It spread out a massive flare of orange into the corridor weakening all of them.

“Come on, run! We need to get to Abigail,” shouted Derek as they ran to the staircase.

“How long does this thing work for?" questioned Dave.

"I don't know, I haven't done this before. Maybe one minute, two max, I think it will depend on how strong the EV is,” shouted Irony as they reached the fourth floor.

“We’re here,” replied a relieved Dave. "Now let's find Abigail".

“So Irony, do you have any idea what is power is?”

“Well me and Gabriel were thinking illusion, but as he needs to stay so close I am thinking it could be probability manipulation,” replied Irony.

“What’s probability manipulation?” asked Derek.

“I am not sure, but I know it gives the user the ability to control and manipulate the probability of something. That means he can control which way we go and will make sure that there is an overwhelming possibility that we go the same way, all the time."

"Wow that's powerful, so he can make people do almost anything?"

"Yes, so as soon as you see him use your ability, if you pause he will make the probability that you can't move very high, so be careful.”

“Wait,” said Dave suddenly, “let's think about this, the EV isn’t in a cell. That means he must be following us. If we just turn around a wait a few seconds, he’ll draw closer and you can stop him.”

As he was saying this, the evolved human turned the corner. Derek lifted his arm to electrocute him, but the man turned and made the probability that Derek would miss and hit Irony very high. So when Derek sent his electricity towards the man, it hit a metal table and was sent straight into Irony’s chest. Derek tried again, but the man made him miss, constantly. While the man was focusing on Derek, Dave pointed at him and he became paralysed, but as he was hitting the floor he made the probability that he could hit the fire alarm sign and reached out and hit the fire alarm causing water to spray down rapidly from the ceiling.

“Dave!” called Irony, "help me up, Derek’s electricity packed a punch but I think I’ll still be able to move.”

"Ahhhhh!" screamed Derek.

“Irony, Derek has been electrocuted. He used his ability just as the sprinklers came on; he looks in really bad shape.”

”We’ll have to carry him, lets just get to Abigail before any more guards come.” As there was a suspected fire, all the cell doors had been opened, so all the prisoners had escaped, but Abigail had stayed behind, encased in a force field.

“Abigail!” yelled Dave, “we need to get you out.”

“Put that wall in a force field!” bellowed Irony. “Then let it go; it should be enough to make the wall collapse and give us an escape route”. Abigail did as Irony said, causing half of the wall in her cell to fall through. “Now, put us all in a force field and we’ll all jump out of the wall, but we need to be quick, guards will be looking for us.” Abigail put everyone in a force field and they jumped out of the cell, escaping to their car.

Meanwhile, back in the prison the guard was being resuscitated after hitting his head on the floor. “One, two, three, clear! One, two, three, clear!" shouted the first aider.

"Come on Andy, you're the bast damn cop we have!" cried the sergeant. But after five minutes the first aider was getting nowhere. "Stop, he’s dead, there’s nothing we can do.”

But as Andy was being moved to a body bag, his eyes opened and he whispered, “Jack the Ripper...”

The Story

Two weeks later, Monday, March 27, 2007

“Scotland Yard,” Officer Bonkin thought, pacing up and down outside of the building, “I’m on the biggest murder mystery in London since Jack the Ripper, but there is no connection between victims, there is not a single bit of DNA, no evidence, nothing! I’m working with the best of the police and even with all of their brainpower, we can’t think of anything. There are no motives, no mean, no connecting force. There is obviously something amiss here, but I can’t understand what it is. There is only one thing I can think of... last week, when we arrested a group if people who were in an explosion, they were different, freaks. One of them touched me, and knocked me out. I’ve gone through the security tapes a thousand time, all you can see is him grab my hand, and then a red glow and then, I’m on the floor, unconscious. Then, all you see is them disappear, they don’t run out, don’t hide, they just disappear. And now, the people who almost killed me are the people I need to help me most.” He walked into the gushing rain, just as a taxi pulls up. “Where to, my friend?” said the driver, “Islington,” replied Bonkin, encased in his own thoughts.

In Islington, London, Irony, Gabriel, Claude and Derek were having a break from training. Claude suddenly turned invisible.

“What’s he up to?”

“With Claude, you never know,” replied Gabriel. Ten minutes later, he returned, with a bag filled with £10 notes.

“How did you get that!” exclaimed Derek. “We’re supposed to be inconspicuous, in the shadows.”

“It's fine,” replied Claude, relaxed, “When you’re in the Company, you learn things. I just stood behind this guy while he entered his PIN, then nabbed his card. Easy come, easy go.”

“But still...”

“How else are we going to get any money? How many of us work?”

“Well since we have money let’s go eat, I’m hungry and we need to relax,” said Irony.

They all went into a local corner shop. “Excuse me, do you sell the Cockney Chronicle?” asked Claude. "We will go for something to eat in a minute, I like to keep up to date with the news."

“That’d be 50p,” replied the cashier. “Have you heard about the new Jack the Ripper?”

“No,” replied Irony.

“Someone is murdering people in the same way that Jack the Ripper did.” As she was talking to him, she touched the side of the till and it opened on its own accord.

“How did you do that?” asked Irony,

“How did I do what?” asked the cashier, “I didn’t do anything.”

"You touched the side of the till and it opened," said Derek.

“It’s okay,” said Gabriel, making a small ball of electricity in his hand, “we’re special too, we wouldn’t turn in one of our own.”

“When I touch things, they turn on and off,” replied the cashier.

“What’s your name?” asked Irony.

“Jenny,” the cashier replied as they all introduced themselves.

“You should come and visit us,” said Claude, “we help people like you learn to control their abilities.”

“I’ll do that,” said Jenny, confident in the presence of others with powers.

They left the shop and as they were making their way back to the warehouse, they heard someone shout, “put your hands up!” It was Officer Bonkin.

“What do you want?” asked Claude.

“You’ve probably heard of the new Jack the Ripper.” They all nodded. “He’s special, like you. You knocked me out by touching me and you disappeared into thin air. You’re different, he is too, I need your help to stop him.”

“Or what?” asked Derek.

“Or, I can arrest you and if, this time you decide to teleport or fly or whatever, my gun will be ready.”

“Okay, we’ll help,” said Irony, “but what do you want us to do?”

“We need you to stop him. There is always DNA, but never a connecting force. We find one set of DNA and a body matches it a day later, stabbed, drowned anything, they all turn up dead.”

“Where do we go?” asked Derek.

“The next murder will be somewhere in Whitechapel, at 9:00, that’s all I know.”

Story Development

The next day, Gabriel made his way back to the corner shop to find Jenny, thinking it would be beneficial to have an extra member to the team, to ask her if she would like to join the Cockney Heroes team and learn to control her ability.

Later that night, the Cockney Heroes, with an added member, made their way to Whitechapel. “There’s no one here yet,” said Derek.

“Well according to the 1888 police report, the murder happened at 8 o’clock, to a young blond girl. The only witness was a middle aged woman who heard a scream coming from the other side of the fence,” replied Claude.

“Are we sure this is going to work?” asked an eager Jenny.

“Yes,” said Irony, clearly agitated. “The killer has been keeping to the strictest routines, it will happen now.”

“Ignore him,” said Gabriel, placing his arm around Jenny, “there’s nothing to worry about, the copycat won’t be able to do anything. All we need to do is get Irony near him, and he’s powerless,” he said, walking over to Irony. “What’s the matter?” he asked.

“Nothing, it’s just that I can hear a whispering in my ear, repeating my real name over and over again.” All of a sudden, a shriek came out of nowhere. The Cockney Heroes ran through the alleys, trying to find the source of the shriek. Suddenly the street went silent. A deadly silence.

Finally, they found a woman, lying dead on the ground, with blood everything she looked like she had been ripped in two. “Oh my God,” whispered Derek before being violently sick on the ground. “How did he do this?” he asked.

“Well, judging by how he copies each murder exactly I'd say he has etheric projection, it's the ability to enter anyone's body and learn from them at anytime and any place. So I would say he entered the real Jack the Ripper, and learned the information from him about the murders.” As Claude was saying this, a shadowy figure appeared from nowhere.

“Who are you?” asked Irony.

“Your worst nightmare,” he whispered, “and you're next.”

“Run!” shouted Irony.

As they sprinted back to the Nissan, Jenny looked around and saw the shadowy figure melt into the shadows.

"Watch out, he has an ability that allows him to become shadows!" yelled Jenny.

Gabriel had teleported forward to warn Officer Bonkin. “Go!” shouted Gabriel.

“Why? Didn't you catch him?”

“We don't know what his abilities are, he could be extremely powerful." As he said this, the rest of the team pulled up in their Nissan.

“Get in,” yelled Irony, “he can move through shadows, if you don’t get in soon he’ll kill us!”

They bounded into the car.

“We should split up,” said Bonkin.

“We’re not Scooby Doo,” said Gabriel. “When you’re working with people like that you stick together or you die.”

10:30, the Warehouse

“Do you remember anyone with etheric projection while you were in the company?” asked Irony.

“No,” said Claude, “I can’t think of anyone.”

As he was saying this, the room disappeared and Irony found himself standing in a room with a massive pool of water in it. “What’s going on?!” shouted Irony, “Where am I? Who are you? Why are you doing this to me?” he shouted into the blackness while he was saying this the shadows melded up from the floor and formed Derek, Gabriel, Jenny and Claude wrapped in chains. Then, the shadows melded again, and the man, who appeared to be Jack the Ripper appeared. This was Irony's worst fear; Jack started pushing the Cockney Heroes into the huge pool of water. The first victim was Jenny.

“Who's next, Irony? Will it be Derek, Claude or Gabriel?”

“Stop it!” shouted Irony.

“I am in control now,” he said as he pushed Derek and Claude in together.

“Don’t!” bellowed Irony, but Jack had already pushed Gabriel in.

The team started to drown as Jack mocked Irony. “The only way to stop this is to come over here and kill me.” Irony dashed over and grabbed Jack, he started using his ability. Jack fell down on the floor.

Meanwhile, in the warehouse, Claude, Gabriel, Jenny and Derek were looking at Irony, who was shouting and screaming in front of them.

“What’s happening?” asked Derek.

“Jack is possessing him, the only problem is he could be anywhere. Jack is making him think things that aren't true.”

“Can’t we stop it?” asked Derek.

“No,” replied Gabriel, solemnly. “If we wake him, he might go into shock.”

"It looks like he is living his greatest fear," said Jenny.

"I hope he isn't," replied Claude, "because that could mean our friend Jack has the ability of fear induction. But to use the ability you need to be close to your victim."

"Come on Bonkin, we will check out side," said Derek.

Back in Irony's dream, Irony was bent over Jack draining his ability, he used every ounce of his power that he had left, after about 40 seconds, he had removed Jack’s power completely and his power was having the same effect that it did on Bonkin, his eyes shrunk, his skin shriveled and his brain went into recession; he couldn’t move at all.

At the same time in the warehouse, Irony was bent over Gabriel draining his ability, he used every ounce of his power that he had left, after about 40 seconds he had removed Gabriel’s power completely and his power was having the same effect that it did on Bonkin, his eyes shrunk, his skin shrivelled and his brain went into recession; he couldn’t move at all he was dying.
