Name Change Request

  • Admin, could you remove the 14 from my name? Thanks!--  Japanimation          My Talk   22:40, 1 December 2007 (EST)
    • Done. (Admin 22:47, 1 December 2007 (EST))
  • Much appreciated--  Japanimation          My Talk   22:49, 1 December 2007 (EST)

Name Changes

I'm curious about the technicalities involved in name changes. After you change names, it looks like you just move the user pages and user talk pages to the new username. But the old pages, which now contain redirects, aren't deleted. Am I right to assume that you block new users from taking the old username after moves? I'm not considering a name change atm, but I don't want there to be potential db holes if this continues to be an ongoing thing.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:18, 1 December 2007 (EST)

  • The old redirects will be deleted, I'm just leaving them temporarily until Japanimation changes all the old links over to his new name. As part of the name change process the requestor needs to be willing to update all the links to their old name so that it's all cleared out in case someone else registers it in the future. I forgot to point this out explicitly before this particular name change, but I don't think there will be a problem. (Admin 23:21, 1 December 2007 (EST))
    • That can be a lot of updates for some users. Japanimation is relatively new, so it's not that big of a problem. Maybe you can check into whether the bot could help with that for future changes. Just a thought.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:30, 1 December 2007 (EST)
      • It can't do it currently, but in time as I add more functionality it may be able to. It's a good idea. (Admin 23:32, 1 December 2007 (EST))

Bot request (maybe)

  • Take a look at User:Hardvice/Guest_stars. We're ready to go with autoportals for minor characters except for one thing: lots of the characters articles don't have |sortname= set. Is it possible to have the bot set |sortname= to PAGENAME for all of the articles which don't have a sortname? Does it matter that some have the variable, but leave it blank, while others don't have the variable at all? Can it be done in two passes if that does matter? Are we better off doing it by hand?--Hardvice (talk) 05:25, 2 December 2007 (EST)
    • Shouldn't be a problem. I should be able to work on it sometime Sunday if I have time. (Admin 05:28, 2 December 2007 (EST))
      • Rock solid.--Hardvice (talk) 05:46, 2 December 2007 (EST)
        • Is there one particular category that you need the sortname added to? (Admin 13:26, 2 December 2007 (EST))
          • It'd be good for all characters. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:58, 2 December 2007 (EST)
            • I mean which category tag for articles should I modify and add the sortname to? Does it have to be added to all categories that those pages have defined or just one specific category? (Admin 16:45, 2 December 2007 (EST))
              • I don't think I understand what a category tag is or what you mean by "all categories that those pages have defined". What needs to happen, as far as I understand, is that any article in Category:Characters that does not have |sortname= defined in their character box should be defined as |sortname={{PAGENAME}}. I hope that helps. If that's still not what you're looking for, I'll let Hardvice respond. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:12, 2 December 2007 (EST)
                • That's it on the nose, though we can probably get away with just Category:Minor Characters. All the others already have sortnames. But yeah, what we need is a variable in the infobox, not a sort added to a category link.--Hardvice (talk) 18:15, 2 December 2007 (EST)
                  • Ah, ok, I see now. (Admin 18:17, 2 December 2007 (EST))
  • Any way to change any Heroes 360 links to Heroes Evolutions? I know there's a few pages in Category:Heroes Evolutions that have them.--Bob (talk) 16:59, 10 December 2007 (EST)

Hello again :)

Hey Admin, remember me? The Hebrew-version guy? :P We haven't talked for a while, although I do read here everyday. I haven't given up on the Hebrew Wiki, and I'm planning on bringing it back to life during the break.

I saw that you opened a wiki for the Bionic Woman, with the same design and everything. I thought to myself, would it be possible for you to open a wiki for Chuck, a great TV show, on your server, with the same design as HeroesWiki and The Bionic Woman.

Obi-Dan Kenobi 13:37, 2 December 2007 (EST)

Sorry to bug you, I just wanted to ask some questions regarding the Hebrew version. When I try to write a paragraph, the text will appear below the infobox, instead of appearing next to it. Any solutions?

And, also, any news about the Chuck wiki? Obi-Dan Kenobi 19:35, 5 December 2007 (EST)

  • Hey there. Sorry, been busy. Can you give me a sample article on the Hebrew version where you're seeing this? Also as for Chuck when I setup a new wiki I like to do it early so that it becomes established rather than having to compete with other subsequent wikis that get created. Since Chuck has been out for a while now it's a little too late. Wikia has a wiki on Chuck you can check out if you'd like. If you find out about any other new series coming out next year that sounds like a good fit for a wiki, let me know once you hear about it so I can consider setting up a site before another wiki on it becomes well-established. (Admin 19:47, 5 December 2007 (EST))
Hiro's article is a good example. Thanks! :) And I'm happy to announce that I'm back, just like Sylar.. :P Obi-Dan Kenobi 19:50, 5 December 2007 (EST)
Ok, check it out now. You may have to refresh the page. I updated the CSS so the infobox floats off to the left (since Hebrew is right-to-left) instead of to the right like it does here. Does it look right like that? (Admin 19:57, 5 December 2007 (EST))
oh, AMAZING! I tried so many things, but they didn't work. OK, I have a lot of work to do. Hebrew HeroesWiki is also back. :P Obi-Dan Kenobi 20:11, 5 December 2007 (EST)

Quite a few name changes

Radiokinesis (induce radioactivity) Florakinesis (plant control) Cryokinesis (freezing) Spontaneous Regeneration (Rapid cell regeneration) Omnilinguality (Omnilingualism) Self-Duplication (replication) Electrokinesis (lightning) Emotion Manipulation (bliss and horror)

i hate to be a bitch but i kinda found some 'better' names for some of the powers. the current names are in brackets

thanks, ash--Ashwilson12 (talk) 16:18, 2 December 2007 (EST)

  • Unfortunately, per our help:naming conventions, it's no to all. Induced radioactivity, freezing, rapid cell regeneration, replication, bliss and horror, and lightning all come from canon or near-canon soruces, which trumps any made-up names. "Florakinesis" literally means "flower movement". "Omnilinguality" is just a very awkward form of "omnilingualism", which follows the pattern of real words like "bilingualism".--Hardvice (talk) 16:21, 2 December 2007 (EST)

...check it. Sorry I called you the "money guy at Heroes Wiki", but I didn't know whether or not you'd want me to give out your name. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:32, 4 December 2007 (EST)

  • A reasonable decision. :) You can give out my first name to anyone in the future, it's on my user page afterall. (Admin 23:43, 4 December 2007 (EST))

Comparing Notes

  • Dear Brian:
We're the guys that run Battlestar Wiki, amongst other things. As a fellow independent wiki operator (we also ended up turning down wikia), we were wondering if you'd talk with us. It looks like our sites run on similar models, and we'd be interested in comparing notes.
In particular, we're having issues handling load during peak usage. Viewing is fine, but we end up having to lock down key articles right after episodes air to prevent edit conflicts from bringing down the server(s). While the traffic of such surges usually brings in enough to sustain the cost of our current two servers, the slow times (between seasons and episodes) often end up coming out of Joe's (our founder) pockets, and so it's hard to justify adding more servers into the equation. Given your background and experience, we were hoping you might have a few ideas.
This was just an overview given my (limited) understanding of the technical operation side of the wiki. If you're interested in talking shop, you'd probably be better of dropping Joe a note at his user page or emailing him (joebeaudoin at joebeaudoin dot net) directly.
Thanks for your time,
Matt Williams

  • Hi, Matt. As you've probably seen by now, I replied on your discussion page over on the Battlestar Wiki. (Admin 18:52, 5 December 2007 (EST))

Re: Postcard javascript

Thanks for fixing the javascript. I recall that that script was on the back of the postcard way back right after when War Buddies graphic novels were first published. Now we may have some use for it, and it appears that in the Heroes world, that Drucker may be the inventor of javascript. ;) PS. I posted what I think should come next if you still have a javascript editor handy.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:41, 13 December 2007 (EST)

  • Ah, to clarify, it is a different postcard than War Buddies. It is postmarked from Bhutan and undated.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:39, 13 December 2007 (EST)

Several users keep adding Flanders theories to Theory:Nathan's assassin, and I saw your note about it on AmazeKing's talk page. The only Flanders I know of is from the Simpsons, which is not part of Heroes.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:11, 14 December 2007 (EST)

  • Several users, or just AmazeKing? (Admin 00:22, 14 December 2007 (EST))
    • Three users, possibly same person: Kejehegefe, OmriKuba and AmazeKing. BTW, do we have a policy on multiple usernames?--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:29, 14 December 2007 (EST)
      • Just checked and there's no conclusive evidence that they're the same person. We don't have an official policy on multiple usernames. If someone wants multiple usernames they're welcome to use them, though if one is abusive they can all be blocked. I think most people with legitimate goals have no need for multiple usernames, but if someone wants more than one for legitimate purposes they're welcome to it. If more Flanders info gets posted just revert and place a polite warning on their talk page telling them that unless they have a reliable and verifyable source for the info that it cannot be included here. After two warnings, bring it to the admins' attention and we'll monitor it directly or take action. We generally like to give people as much of a chance as possible since reverting edits is so easy. (Admin 00:35, 14 December 2007 (EST))
        • Slightly related: is spoiler information allowed to be used on theory pages? I was under the impression that it wasn't. -- Lulu .:talk:. 00:37, 14 December 2007 (EST)
          • I don't remember for certain since I don't use the Theory pages much, but my recollection is that spoiler info isn't allowed. Since a Flanders article was created at one point (and deleted soon afterwards) I'm personally curious whether there's any validity to this info because if it were true then while it may not be appropriate for theories, it would be appropriate for spoiler articles. (Admin 00:39, 14 December 2007 (EST))
            • Indeed my thoughts. Thank you. (And sorry for the hijack) :] -- Lulu .:talk:. 00:42, 14 December 2007 (EST)

Suggesting a ban for User:AmazeKing

Recently, all of his edits have consisted of reverting removal of the name "Flanders". --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 20:01, 16 December 2007 (EST)

  • Thanks. I'm keeping an eye on it. It won't continue for much longer. (Admin 20:09, 16 December 2007 (EST))

Something new (or something I overlooked)

I've noticed I now have (or did and didn't notice) the ability to revert images back to a previously uploaded one. Is this something new, or is this just something I overlooked in the past? -- Lulu .:talk:. 10:39, 18 December 2007 (EST)

  • It's always been possible to revert an image to one of its previous ones, but I believe the explicit "revert" link is relatively new. It's been around for at least a few months though. :) (Admin 10:50, 18 December 2007 (EST))
    • Haha, silly me. I got a distinct "Oh, never seen that before" feeling this morning when I accidentally clicked it. Oh well, sorry to bother. :] -- Lulu .:talk:. 16:16, 18 December 2007 (EST)
      • No bother. :) (Admin 16:26, 18 December 2007 (EST))

FF 3 Beta 2

Hey, I'm using the new beta for FF, and I noticed that some of the content is cutting off. Hopefully it's just the browser, but I figured I'd give you a heads up. The main logo cuts off at the bottom on any page, and on a few pages (like Recent changes), the tabs are about an inch about the rest of the page. Weird thing is it doesn't happen every time, but every five or six times I load it. Weird.--Bob (talk) 08:06, 21 December 2007 (EST)

BR's: to slash or not to slash

Hi, I noticed you added a /(slash) to the br tag in the sitenotice. Is there a reason to prefer to have a slash in br tags? I've tried both FF and IE, and I didn't see a difference. Is this something new with FF 3 Beta 2?--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:52, 24 December 2007 (EST)

  • As far as I know all browsers are smart enough not to get confused when it's left open, but according to proper W3 standards all XHTML content (which is what MediaWiki tries to conform to) is supposed to have an explicit closing. Closing the BR properly helps the site be more compliant with W3 which, aside from being tidier, can somewhat influence search rankings with certain engines. (Admin 17:07, 24 December 2007 (EST))
    • Ah, thanks for the info. That's very important and useful info. Does this standard also apply to <P> tags? Strangely, I know about closing P tags by using an extra </P> after the text, but I didn't recall about closing BR tags using a slash used after the tagname. Is <P/> correct usage per W3 standards?--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:31, 24 December 2007 (EST)
      • I don't often see <p /> but as that syntax is generally shorthand for <p></p> then it should also be acceptable (assuming that <p> is allowed to be empty according to the standards (I don't know offhand). (Admin 17:38, 24 December 2007 (EST))
        • According to these standards, <p> should not be used in empty form; also, it says that horizontal rule and image tags should be handled like br (adding a slash), and that all attribute values should be in quotes. They're a good resource.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:00, 24 December 2007 (EST)

Help with userpage

  • Hey for some reason the profile bar, where you put your name and your favorite character is not on a bar its showing up as typing instead how do I fix that? Horrorman 10:04, 31 December 2007 (EST)
    • You didn't close one of your links with two ] characters. I've added the ] so it should be fixed now.--MiamiVolts (talk) 10:47, 31 December 2007 (EST)
      • Ok thanks for the help. Happy New Years Day! Horrorman 12:19, 31 December 2007 (EST)
