Women in Refridgerators

I admit I have. But it is just getting ridiculous and I wanted a response from other fans. When I used to watch Lost, it really annoyed me. Now I see Heroes following that trend. Oh and add Meredith Gordon to that overwhelming list. If only that could get rid of Angela, Matt and Noah. And maybe Peter. User:Blood69 14:38, 1 February 2010 (AEST)

Patroller

Returned I Have.

I have returned RGS. I was wondering if you could give me any info about any changes to the site. Thanks. 30,30px Linderman Mendez (Talk) | (Contributions)

  • I got something, on you're userpage are all the admins but there are other admins now: MiamiVolts and Radicell joined and Ted C isn't an admin anymore.-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 12:17, 1 February 2010 (EST)
    • Ok, cheers Yoshi n1. 30,30px Linderman Mendez (Talk) | (Contributions)
      • And how do I make the colour in my sig the same as the colour on the outside of the badge? 30,30px Linderman Mendez (Talk) | (Contributions)
        • I'm not sure what you mean...but you'll definitely need to fix your signature since it's messing up text on pages. I think you need to close a font tag. Welcome back, by the way. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:00, 1 February 2010 (EST)
          • I took care of the font tag. If you mean the square image in your signature, you just need to change the red color in your signature to be the same as the color of the badge. It appears to be #ac0003. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:18, 1 February 2010 (EST)

This is my sig (select edit to show):

30,30px Linderman Mendez (Talk) | (Contributions)

So how do I make the background colour different? I've put red and then the ac0003 in, but it still comes up in the normal red.

Yeah, thanks a lot Yoshi n1! You're helpful! :D I like the new things. And new users. It's great being back!

iStory

excited? only a few hours... --mc_hammark 17:08, 1 February 2010 (EST)

  • PSYCHED! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:11, 1 February 2010 (EST)
    • Great job on the latest iStory chapter, Ryan. I enjoyed reading it tonight and thought the action played out well, especially the scene with Eli and two clones. ;) There were a few times that the word 'bead' was used, that seemed a bit awkward to me; not sure if the word was supposed to be 'read' instead. Other than that, it flowed pretty well. I hope they give you the chance to write some more.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:46, 2 February 2010 (EST)
      • Thanks, Miami! Funny about the word "bead" -- I actually didn't write those two lines, but that's how it came back to me after it was edited. In the next draft, I changed the words to "read" along with a bunch of other changes. Most of the other changes were accepted, but the word "bead" stayed. I still don't get it. Oh well! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:17, 2 February 2010 (EST)

Hey,,

I just wanted to apologize if my post came off as even slightly offensive. I didn't mean it to sound that way. If it counts for anything, I don't usually follow the iStories, since I have a hard time following an "Optimal path", but I read the one you made and definitely enjoyed it :)--Riddler 01:08, 2 February 2010 (EST)

  • Thanks. No offense was taken. (How's that foot taste?) :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:10, 2 February 2010 (EST)

Enhanced Strength Split

I saw that you made a comment on the Enhanced strength talk page, but didn't give your opinion on the split. Personally I see enough evidence of a difference to warrant a split, not to mention the 12:1 for the split. The split template has been up for nearly 2 weeks and we've only had one opposed, which didn't even really have a reason. Anyway, I just want to know your opinion on the situation. Thanks. --mc_hammark 13:20, 2 February 2010 (EST)

  • I don't really have an opinion on the issue. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:19, 2 February 2010 (EST)
    • Could you split it for us now, it's been up for ages now, only one person is opposed with the reason of "why do we call all the others enhanced?". Thanks. --mc_hammark 12:55, 5 February 2010 (EST)
      • I don't see consensus. See here. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:03, 5 February 2010 (EST)
        • People were asked their opinions again, and it's a landslide. Plus, some of the people of the old consensus aren't even members anymore. TEN was in the first consensus. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 16:06, 5 February 2010 (EST)
          • That doesn't negate the opinions people have already expressed. People who previously felt that there should be no split would need to be contacted for their opinions, like I was above. My opinion has changed to such that I don't have an opinion anymore. We would need to check with active members (I would say "active" means having made an edit in, say, the last month or so) to see if their opinions have changed, too. Specifically, Piemanmoo, MiamiVolts, and HiroDynoSlayer need to be checked with to see if they're okay with going against an opinion they've already expressed. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:16, 5 February 2010 (EST)

Survey

...
Hi RGS, I just found this picture at the unused files section and i think it speaks the truth, this survey comes on my screen sometimes, and i think it's really annoying. So i wonder if you could do something about it? I dont know for sure if I should ask it to you or ask it to Admin.-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 13:38, 2 February 2010 (EST)
  • Yeah, that's an Admin question. If he doesn't respond to a talk page message, his email is admin at heroeswiki dot com. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:18, 2 February 2010 (EST)

Henry Strauss

So in looking over this image again, I have to be honest, it looks way more like an "H" than a "W". It seemed like an intentional connection. What are your thoughts on connecting them, or otherwise asking someone on staff to see what the intention was? --Ricard Desi (t,c) 20:37, 2 February 2010 (EST)

  • Comparing it to the H in Hal and Hills, and then to the M in Mother and the W in White, I think it's an M or a W, not an H. I asked Christina Haberkern, but she never got back to me. Maybe I'll try a follow up. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:59, 2 February 2010 (EST)
    • On close inspection, it would appear that at the very least it's not a W, as the vertical potion of the letter is not slanted in either direction, at least not as much as the W in "White". --Ricard Desi (t,c) 21:12, 2 February 2010 (EST)

Hallie

Does she have the same power as Pearl? ;) Green.gif AltesUTC CH 11:14, 3 February 2010 (EST)

  • No. She creates seismic bursts when she throws up. We call it enhanced vomiting. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:26, 3 February 2010 (EST)
    • LOL! What about the others? You have enhanced memory, right? Green.gif AltesUTC CH 02:35, 9 February 2010 (EST)
      • We're still waiting for the others to manifest. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:10, 9 February 2010 (EST)

iStory question

I have a question about the latest iStory, and since you're the writer (nice job btw :D), it makes the most sense to ask you here. The latest iStory seemed to imply that Mulligan could also fast-forward time, evidenced by the sentence "...and right now he's stuck on fast-forward and shorting out" and the scene where he rewinds and seemingly accelerates time in order to "oscillate" and see the Watcher. Does he also have the power to accelerate time or am I just reading it too literally?--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 16:19, 3 February 2010 (EST)

  • I was wondering that too... and I was also wondering if it was just me that read it like that, since the temporal rewind page hasn't been touched... --mc_hammark 16:21, 3 February 2010 (EST)
    • Good question. No, Mulligan can't fast forward time. (Well, I didn't create the character--that was Zach Wilson--so I'll say that if he can fast forward time, he hasn't figured out how to do it.) Mulligan can only rewind time; he cannot pause or fast forward. But I can see how the two quotes put together could be confusing. The first quote, found here, says, "Rewinding time takes a lot of energy, and right now he's stuck on fast forward and shorting out." That's simply a play on words, not literal fast forwarding. I could say the exact same thing about any person who works harder than he should. The second, found here, says, "He begins to rewind and fast forward time so quickly, that he reaches a state of near-oscillation, pure vibration." This is just a case of the wording being a little off. It was referring to the speed he is rewinding time (meaning fast or slow). Sorry for the confusion...but great question! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:40, 3 February 2010 (EST)

Delete unused

I know it isn't really my business, but isn't it time to delete the unused files now? Because there are 31.-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 17:21, 3 February 2010 (EST)

  • When I was first made an administrator, Admin asked me to be conservative in deleting files. I like to wait at least two to four weeks before deleting images. (It helps to include the date when you nominate something for deletion. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:25, 3 February 2010 (EST)

Company partner

I don't know if this has ever been suggested, but do you think it would be useful on the wiki to include "Company partner(s)" on the character template? --Ricard Desi (t,c) 09:54, 7 February 2010 (EST)

  • You mean information from the list of Company partnerships in the character infoboxes? Possibly. But a lot of those infoboxes are already quite bloated, and some people had numerous partners. Personally, I'd rather see the information in the "About" section, or even the lead section of the character pages. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:56, 7 February 2010 (EST)

Time

I'm a little bit confused, here in the Netherlands it's 21:45 (the time). On the recent changes page is written that in the USA it's 20:48, so does that mean that Heroes starts in the USA on NBC in 15 minutes? (Sorry about the whole time thing, I never really understood the time in the USA, I mean in NY it's a different time than in LA)-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 15:51, 8 February 2010 (EST)

  • Just so you know, it's 20:50 (ish) right now in the UK, and going from your post above, it seems to be only coming up for 4 in the US. --mc_hammark 15:53, 8 February 2010 (EST)
    • But the UK and the Netherlands should have the same time, right?-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 15:54, 8 February 2010 (EST)
      • No, you guys are an hour ahead. I always use this for checking. --mc_hammark 15:56, 8 February 2010 (EST)
        • Thanks :), but about the USA, how is it possible to air Heroes on 9PM when you got different times in different states?-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 15:59, 8 February 2010 (EST)
          • The continental United States has four time zones. From east to west, they are Eastern Time, Central Time, Mountain Time, and Pacific Time. Heroes starts at 9 pm ET, 8 pm CT, which is exactly the same time. I think it starts at 9 pm MT, and 9 pm PT, but I'm not sure...however, it's definitely different times than in the east. The reason for the difference is because if the entire country showed the show at the same time, it would be 9 pm in the east, but only 6 pm in the west, and people wouldn't even be home from work at that time. The way they operate this difference is through local affiliates--NBC is the network, but local stations are the ones who show NBC shows. So I might watch NBC on Channel 8 here in Pennsylvania, but somebody in New York might watch NBC on Channel 4 (even though we're in the same time zone). Somebody on the west coast might watch on a completely different channel--it all depends on the local affiliate showing the broadcast, I believe.

On Heroes Wiki, you can specify your time zone in your preferences. Just go into the "Date and time" tab, and find the spot for your time zone. If you're not sure what it is, I think you can just click "Fill in from browser", and your browser will tell Heroes Wiki what time zone you're in. I think. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:23, 8 February 2010 (EST)

            • Thanks so much Ryan, I can really see that you're a teacher:)-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 16:28, 8 February 2010 (EST)
              •  :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:30, 8 February 2010 (EST)
                • Btw about being a teacher, I know that 11-12 isn't really the common age for Heroes watchers but do you have any students who know that you're a Heroes wiki admin and a digital writer for NBC? Just curious.-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 16:33, 8 February 2010 (EST)
                • I've actually wondered about that also. I would have loved having a teacher who watched the same TV shows as the rest of the class back in sixth grade :D--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 16:35, 8 February 2010 (EST)
                  • They all know. (I used the editing process I just went through with the iStory as an example of how to edit their papers.) A good number know what Heroes is, but only a few (maybe 5 to 10 students out of 70) watch Heroes on a regular basis. Remember, it's not just the fact that they're 11 and 12 years old--they were only 7 and 8 when the show started, so not many have jumped on board in the intervening time. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:37, 8 February 2010 (EST)
                    • I used to watch American Idol all the time 1) because it was a really good show, but also 2) because I could talk to my students about it the next day. Especially when I was teaching younger grades (2nd, 3rd, and 4th), there were so few shows that the kids would watch that I would watch too. And even if there were a few (like Family Guy), I didn't feel comfortable talking about those shows with my students because of the inappropriate content. So American Idol was always a good show that crossed generation lines, and was good, clean family fun. (This year, I'm not watching American Idol because, believe it or not, I miss Paula's kookiness. Plus, with Simon leaving, I'm afraid the show is going downhill. Plus, I don't have a lot of time to watch!)

But I love telling my kids about my Heroes adventures. When they were asking about the Haiti earthquakes, I told them about my conversation with Jimmy Jean-Louis. When we do interviews in class to practice reading comprehension, I tell them a bit about some of my Heroes interviews. Last year we tried doing some work on a private wiki, and I shared some editing tips with them. I talk to them about the process of editing all the time. And I even gave my class last year extra credit if they were able to find me on YouTube. :) It's all nerdy fun, with a bit of education along the way. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:44, 8 February 2010 (EST)

                      • That's so cool :), and btw it's a good plan, not talking about family guy lol-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 16:48, 8 February 2010 (EST)
                        • I'll talk about The Simpsons with a few of my 6th graders, but not my 2nd graders (and not with my entire class of 6th graders, either). I won't talk about Family Guy at all...even though I think the show is brilliant. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:00, 8 February 2010 (EST)
                          • As much as I love Family Guy I think it's started to go a bit downhill and get repetitive. Now the Star Wars spoofs they done, those were amazing. If it were up to me, I'd have them just do movie spoofs and release one a month. --mc_hammark 17:06, 8 February 2010 (EST)
                            • Each episode is more or less a collection of spoofs on different topics tied together by a basic storyline. But I agree, I loved Blue Harvest. Ryan, your students must love you :)--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 17:13, 8 February 2010 (EST)

So, I wonder.

As a sort of aspiring playwright/screenwriter, I was wondering how you came to do writing work with NBC. It seems really cool to be able to add your own work and unique style to an established universe as popular as that of Heroes. --Ricard Desi (t,c) 17:12, 8 February 2010 (EST)

  • It is pretty cool, and I consider myself very lucky. I'm not really sure how the job came about...I guess it's mostly the relationship I've built up over time with several of the Heroes staff--Joe Tolerico in particular. Joe asked me to do some work on Heroes: Survival, and then asked if I had any interest in writing an iStory chapter. It was a very generous offer, and I'm grateful just for the opportunity. (My wife is grateful for the paycheck!) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:38, 8 February 2010 (EST)

Right side

Hey Ryan! About the image link template, how do I make it so that it floats on the right side? I originally thought that it would be like the <center> </center> thing, but I am unsure. Would you happen to know?--Catalyst · Talk · HL 20:53, 8 February 2010 (EST)

  • I'm sure there are other ways, but the best and easiest way is put it in a table that is aligned to the right. Check out how it looks here. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:09, 8 February 2010 (EST)

Supercharging

Regarding my recent move of "Red lightning" to "supercharging", what did I do wrong?--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 00:23, 9 February 2010 (EST)

  • Cut and paste. When a page is cut and pasted to move it, the history is not preserved. It has to be moved using the "move" button. When it's being moved over a page that already exists, like the case with supercharging, the page that already exists has to be deleted. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:25, 9 February 2010 (EST)
    • Ah. So essentially, only an admin could have done that particular move?--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 00:26, 9 February 2010 (EST)
      • Yeah. There are really convoluted ways around it...but basically an admin needs to delete the existing page. No biggy, though. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:30, 9 February 2010 (EST)

Heroes Interactive for Brave New World

I got the iSMS messages recorded on my phone tonight, just in case... so let me know if you have any trouble adding this week's interactive. I thought the answer to the question about Amanda was funny. :)--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:04, 9 February 2010 (EST)

  • Yep, I've got it. I'll see if I can find some time to take care of transcribing today or tomorrow... Yeah, the question and response about Amanda were weird. I could have sworn the graphic novel was going to be about her, or they were somehow going to introduce her in a webisode or something like that. Odd... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:11, 9 February 2010 (EST)
    • Yeah, perhaps she'll be the subject of the next or a future set of iStory during the Spring/Summer? It is kind of odd how they phrased that answer. I took it as if they wanted to know too...--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:18, 11 February 2010 (EST)

After a lot of searching i found 13 examples, do you agree with these examples?-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 17:14, 11 February 2010 (EST)

  • Yes. And they can absolutely be added to the page. But unless we have images for them, we don't need an examples page. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:13, 11 February 2010 (EST)

All aspects

There has been some debate (as usual, ha) over at the freezing talk page, in regard to where to apply the "all aspects" rule in naming. I was wondering if you could weight in? --Ricard Desi (t,c) 18:20, 11 February 2010 (EST)

  • Thanks for letting me know. I've been following the discussion, and I think I have weighed in previously. The "all aspects" aspect of the naming conventions only applies to descriptive names that we create ourselves or glean from things said in episodes, etc. However, if a name is given to us explicitly, as it was with Tracy's ability, we use it, even if it's not the best name, and even if it doesn't cover all aspects of the ability. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:15, 11 February 2010 (EST)

Brief question

Is there any rule for or against linking to wikipedia in the middle of an article? I saw a user do this to an episode summary on Nathan's page, but wasn't sure whether it should be left alone or not.--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 00:30, 13 February 2010 (EST)

  • I don't think so. It's more for things such as ancient myth monsters, if one was ever mentioned, then we'd link to a wikipedia article on it, instead of creating a brand new article for it. I think that's reasonable. What's the link anyway? --mc_hammark 10:12, 13 February 2010 (EST)
    • That's correct, mc_h. It's fine to do if there is no article on Heroes Wiki already. So if we were going to be mentioning something about Sherlock Holmes, you wouldn't link to Sherlock Holmes, but to Sherlock Holmes. By the way, the link to wikipedia articles is [[Wikipedia:NAME OF ARTICLE]]. You can pipe with this, too--so [[Wikipedia:Dave Matthews Band|DMB]] would be look like DMB. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 11:45, 13 February 2010 (EST)
      • Thanks (It was to a military flight formation done at Nathan's funeral).--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 15:32, 13 February 2010 (EST)
        • That's a perfect way to use a Wikipedia link. It would be silly for us to create an article ourselves about military procedures. A summary of pertinent information might be a good piece of trivia on Nathan's funeral, but on an episode summary page, a Wikipedia link is a great idea. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:55, 13 February 2010 (EST)
          • All right, I'll keep that in mind for the future.--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 17:18, 13 February 2010 (EST)
            • I'm actually confused about some of those links. Firstly we named the guy Funeral lieutenant but the wikipedia link links to Navy "Commander". And on the lieutenant page it's noted to be a 9 gun salute, but nathan's page notes it as a 21 gun salute. It's rather confusing and I'd clean it up myself, but I don't know which is correct and which isn't. :) --mc_hammark 17:24, 13 February 2010 (EST)
              • The character was credited as "funeral lieutenant". Feel free to correct the Wikipedia link if needed. I'd have to go back and watch the episode to double check, but I don't remember a 21-gun salute. I thought it was much less--nine sounds correct. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:41, 13 February 2010 (EST)

Season Summaries

When should we start making the pages for Season Four?? ~~IHHTalk 11:08, 13 February 2010 (EST)

  • Exact same question was just asked here. :)--mc_hammark 11:09, 13 February 2010 (EST)
    • You can start right away, though we typically wait until closer to the end of the summer since we usually put graphic novel summaries from the summer in the previous season (so GNs released in spring and summer 2010 will be part of Season Four). Also, please note that character who have only appeared in Season Four (like Samuel or Lydia) should not be archived. I'll post this same comment on talk:heroes and we can continue the conversation there, more publicly. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 11:51, 13 February 2010 (EST)

Sure, I'd love to be one. Thanks. --mc_hammark 19:58, 13 February 2010 (EST)

  • One question; do all edits need to be patrolled? Do we have to patrol user talk pages and user pages? Though I wouldn't think user subpages would need them would they? --mc_hammark 20:07, 13 February 2010 (EST)
    • Eventually. I put them at a lower priority than main namespace pages...but yes, even user pages should be patrolled. (You'll notice that the recent changes page often shows lots of unpatrolled user pages--that's because people usually worry about those last, and rightfully so.) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:13, 13 February 2010 (EST)
      • No objection or anything (because i think mc hammark deserved to be made an patroller). but Ryan, dont you always make people patrollers on the first of the month?-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 20:15, 13 February 2010 (EST)
        • Do I? I never noticed. I guess that's an unconscious pattern I must have been following. Consciously, I do two things: 1) I look for candidates when I see that our unpatrolled edits are getting out of hand, and 2) I make somebody a patroller if they're just a really good, strong editor, like you and mc_h. In today's example, we didn't really need any more patrollers--I just think it's an "injustice" when a strong editor like mc_h is not a patroller. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:20, 13 February 2010 (EST)
          • Yeah, I get it:) -- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 06:38, 14 February 2010 (EST)
            • I've been patrolling the main pages, just now all but one are done (excluding mine), but the one that isn't done I can't access the diff bit. I don't understand why I can't. See, here. --mc_hammark 10:44, 14 February 2010 (EST)
              • Because it's a new page, you need to go to the new page and go all the way down (look right) and than there is writter "mark as patrolled", then you got it (I allready fixed the one you where talking about btw).-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 11:07, 14 February 2010 (EST)

Monologues

Hello Ryan! I've just visited the pages of the episodes "Genesis" and "Don't Look Back" and I just noticed that in these pages is written the name of the person who says the opening narration. I want to know if I have to do the same thing with all the other episodes, or remove the names from this two episodes, thanks TanderixUTCR 13:14 (Italy)February 14, 2010

  • A couple months ago we decided to not put them on there. Please take them off Tanderix! ~~IHHTalk 10:59, 14 February 2010 (EST)

Baldbobbo

It's not my businesses and I really dont mean to be rude or anything, but should'nt we get Baldbobbo off the Admin's list? He hasn't made an edit in five months. Mabye It's stupid that I sad this...-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 13:41, 14 February 2010 (EST)

  • And btw Ryan, could you delete the following files for me? Thank you so much! Image:Yoshi Eggs.jpg, Image:Yoshi Talk.JPG, Image:Yoshi egg.jpg, Image:Yoshi'sPage.jpg, Image:Pig mimicry.jpg, Image:Eclipse2.png, and Image:Yoshi.jpg.-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 14:11, 14 February 2010 (EST)

GN?

Hi Ryan, has a new graphic novel been released today, or has it just not been updated?-- By Danko CH 12:15, 16 February 2010 (EST)

  • They're working with a skeleton staff at NBC right now. Most people's contracts were up last week (mine included). But Ollie Grigsby wrote yesterday in his blog that there would be a new graphic novel today, called 1968. It would be the first in a line of eight GNs called From the Files of Primatech. I'm sure it's just late... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:51, 16 February 2010 (EST)

  • Please delete the episodes of Maya history, abilities and characters of Maya history-User:Adamhiro 15:22, 23 February 2010(LT)
    • Done. Next time, please give me links, or page names, or mark the pages for deletion with the afd tag. Thanks. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:48, 23 February 2010 (EST)

Behind the Eclipse?

Hey man. I was just wondering if Behind the Eclipse was still around. I tried finding the latest post(s) but wasn't able to find any. Apparently it only went up to the end of last season. Thank You :) --Trevorrrj 04:10, 17 February 2010 (EST)

  • No, it's not around any more. You're right, the last one was at the end of last summer. I asked Joe and Aron (and the guys at CBR) if they would consider doing a BTE-type Q&A session on Heroes Wiki in S4, but I never heard back from anybody. :( -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:56, 17 February 2010 (EST)

Portal:MiscellaneousCharacters

Even if we alphabetize by last name, why does "concert woman" go before "chris coolidge"? Also, I'm sorry if this and my edit to the portal seem to insinuate that you don't know the alphabet, I'm just confused lol.--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 02:10, 18 February 2010 (EST)

  • Because "woman" is not her last name. We alphabetize concert woman under concert, and we alphabetize Chris Coolidge under Coolidge. No worries, I've learned a long time ago not to take offense. And your edit was not offensive. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:49, 18 February 2010 (EST)

iStory in the summer

Do you know if there's another iStory coming this summer? And/or when it will be released? --Radicell 21:14, 19 February 2010 (EST)

  • No, there's not. Carri Wagner told me that the iStory is ending, along with HSG. Neither Zach Wilson nor I are working for NBC, as our contracts are over. That could all change if Heroes is renewed for S5, but even with that, I don't really know anything. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:18, 19 February 2010 (EST)
    • By ending HSG, do you mean removing it or just no longer adding new types of messages to it? --mc_hammark 07:32, 20 February 2010 (EST)
      • You know just about everything I know. :) I think it means it will still be there, but it won't be as active as before. As for specifics, I don't know. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:46, 20 February 2010 (EST)

Namespaces

Double check that the following is present for each defined namespace in the Localsettings.php file: -

$wgNamespacesWithSubpages[NS_NAME] = true;

(NAME being the relevant namespace), This should fix it. - Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 17:26, 20 February 2010 (EST)

  • It should all look something like this (Numbers are individual identifiers):-

define("NS_ISTORY", 122);
define("NS_ISTORY_TALK", 123);
$wgExtraNamespaces[NS_ISTORY] = "iStory";
$wgExtraNamespaces[NS_ISTORY_TALK] = "iStory_talk";
$wgNamespacesWithSubpages[NS_ISTORY] = true;
- Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 17:38, 20 February 2010 (EST)

  • Thanks, Jenx. I'm not sure how to get to localsettings.php, though (or even if I can). -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:45, 20 February 2010 (EST)
    • Localsettings.php will be in the site's main directory (e.g. heroeswiki/public_html/Localsettings.php or something similar.), Direct access to the files on the server will be required. It's probably best to ask Admin to check it out. Good luck! :P - Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 02:54, 21 February 2010 (EST)
    • That's not exactly how it's done. What is it you're looking for, just support for subpages within the iStory namespace? That's what it sounds like so I'll go ahead and enable it. (Admin 14:06, 21 February 2010 (EST))
      • Ryan, got your list of namespaces you wanted subpages enabled for. I went ahead and enabled them all. All set now. And yes, the config file can only be accessed locally. (Admin 14:16, 21 February 2010 (EST))

Digital Writer

What exactly does a digital writer do?--Boycool42 07:41, 26 February 2010 (EST)

  • Different digital writers have different responsibilities. My responsibilities included liaison work with fans, reporting bugs and issues with HSG, updating the "What's New" section of HSG, writing some (not all) event messages and email blasts, writing a couple of announcements to fans, and writing a chapter of the iStory. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:19, 26 February 2010 (EST)

Hulu links

Should some of these be removed? Hulu's only showing the five most recent episodes, so the rest of the links lead to nowhere.--PJDEP - Talk - Polls and Opinions 03:06, 27 February 2010 (EST)

  • No, the rest do lead to the original episode. They just dont show these video's on the Hulu menu but they do save the video's.-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 08:43, 27 February 2010 (EST)
    • What do you mean? I've clicked on several and all I get is "Error 404 Video Not Found" while a Homer Simpson Doh! montage plays.--PJDEP - Talk - Polls and Opinions 10:10, 27 February 2010 (EST)
      • Hulu keeps their links active as long as NBC does. I think only the last five episodes or so are on Hulu right now. All other Hulu links (all the ones that are dead link) should be removed or commented out. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:02, 27 February 2010 (EST)
        • Alright, I can take care of that.--PJDEP - Talk - Polls and Opinions 14:25, 27 February 2010 (EST)

What happened

You do not know what happened to Agent Jordan and Joshuakorolenko, and why they do not created Chronicle...-Adamhiro- 18:46, 27 February 2010(LT)

  • I think what happened to them is kinda the same as what happened to Cockney Heroes. They kinda stopped editing it and slowly no work for it got done, then they just stopped coming on Heroes Wiki as much. Although, currently Cockney Heroes is trying to start back up again :) --Leckie -- Talk 14:00, 27 February 2010 (EST)

a DPL experiment going wrong

After a couple of stabs at trying a DPL list of characters and their abilities, I dont know what Im doing wrong with that tool that I barely know how to use. help?--SacValleyDweller (talk) 22:26, 27 February 2010 (EST)

  • DPL is my weakest point. I can make lists, but I'm not sure how to make tables very well. This link might help you out. If not, ask MiamiVolts -- he tends to be the resident expert on the code. Sorry, I wish I could help more, Sac. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:31, 27 February 2010 (EST)
    • Right, but Miami's been making himself scarce, at least when I touch base with the wiki anymore. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 23:55, 27 February 2010 (EST)
      • Jenx222 is an expert in codes, mabye he can help you out.-- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 06:56, 28 February 2010 (EST)
        • Agree. If you look three topics ago, he helped me too!--Tanderix 07:20, 28 February 2010 (EST)
  • It's all fixed. --Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 09:34, 28 February 2010 (EST)
    • Actually, it's not. The table only goes up to L because DPL has limits on how many results are returned. The list mentions all characters, not just evolved humans. (Is that what you wanted, Sac? You might want to use category=Evolved Humans. See here.) Also, I've never been able to figure out how to print the variable power(s). I think it's the parentheses that throw everything off, and I've never seen a feasible workaround, even in my sandbox example I gave. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 12:16, 28 February 2010 (EST)
      • Check it again, lol. It's just not in alphabetical order. :PWait, no, there are people missing, I'm sure we came up against something like this before. --Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 12:41, 28 February 2010 (EST)
        • I've found some light reading you might find interesting. It just defines the different variables that can be set with regards to DPL2 (the version we are using). --Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 13:16, 28 February 2010 (EST)
          • Isn't this more in line with what we're using? I'm not sure... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:33, 28 February 2010 (EST)
            • There basically the same just from different sites. I know were definitely using DPL2 though. see here. --Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 13:40, 28 February 2010 (EST)
  • So, I've been watching the Olympics some today... Congrats to the winners! :) Anyways, I think Ryan is correct... we use the version from semeb.com, coded by Gero. Also, there is a limit on the max. number of results DPL can return on a single page (500), so you need to use the offset parameter to create separate listings for 501-1000, 1001-1500, etc. At first glance, I think one difficulty you might be having is that the template allows both 'power(s)' and 'known power(s)' to mean the same thing, so you need to search for both to get the entire listing. Perhaps you already realized this? I'm just starting to take a look at the different versions.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:40, 28 February 2010 (EST)
    • Correct on all accounts. I know you can return more than one variable input for a template, such as include={Character box}:known powers:power(s). However, I can't get it to return anything for power(s), even when it's all by itself (include={Character box}:power(s)). I'm assuming it's something to do with the parentheses in the variable name? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:25, 28 February 2010 (EST)
      • One way around this would be to manually change every instance of power(s)= to known powers=, but I don't like that solution at all. By my count, there are close to 70 evolved humans who use the power(s)= variable, and many more who are humans. Plus, it's really only putting a bandage over the real problem, which is that DPL isn't returning results for variables with parentheses in them. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:28, 28 February 2010 (EST)
    • Ok, I've improved the listing some (see here)... note that that Heroes Evolutions characters use a different infobox template, so we need to either list them in a second column or in a separate listing. For to get 'power(s)' to list, I think we can use DPLSearch to search through all the text. Because 'powers' is an alias to the 'known powers' argument and not a separate template argument, I don't think the standard argument/parameter search builtin to DPL will work. Note that in the infobox, the code uses {{#if:{{{known power(s)|{{{power(s)}}}}}. I think we can also copy the template code, adding another if statement in the infobox statement to make your old DPL code in the Sandbox parse the 'power(s)' parameter.--MiamiVolts (talk) 21:31, 28 February 2010 (EST)
      • Good call on the HE template. I'll let you work on the DPLSearch stuff. That's beyond me. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:09, 28 February 2010 (EST)
        • Ok, will try it.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:12, 28 February 2010 (EST)
        • Alright, we've got a working list (see here)! It's three columns as of right now, so it can probably be formatted better, but it's a start. And amazingly, I didn't have to use DPLSearch or alter the infoboxes, just had to add a backslash before the opening and closing parentheses. So you were right again, Ryan, it was the "(s)" that caused the problem, after all. The backslashes are required for the DPL to do a regular expression search... That's something new I just learned that isn't in the manual. :)--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:44, 28 February 2010 (EST)
          • Awesome find. I've tried to do some organizing with the powers in the past, and I've always given up because I could never figure out how to get past the parentheses in the power(s) variable. Very cool. Now, I'm not very up on creating tables...but if you want just a list of characters and their powers, see here. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:30, 1 March 2010 (EST)
            • Just checked the sites, they both link back to the same thing anyway. I do believe we are using DPL2 though, either that or the version page has malfunctioned, :P. I could be wrong though, I'm no expert. I'm using the latest version over on the X-Files wiki. --Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 05:41, 1 March 2010 (EST)
            • Looks good, Ryan. Jenx222, there's multiple versions of DPL on the MediaWiki site. X-Files wiki appears to use the latest version of the extension Heroes Wiki uses from Semeb.com, made by Gero. In the MediaWiki SVN, there's a similar version Extension:DynamicPageList (third-party) that also defines a <DynamicPageList> tag and a setFunctionalRichness() function, the now obsolete Extension:DynamicPageList2 that was incorporated into Extension:DynamicPageList, and also Extension:DynamicPageList (Wikimedia). The latter was previously called Extension:Intersection and only includes a DynamicPageList tag.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:33, 1 March 2010 (EST)
